Muslims

On submission, architecture, the call at 4 a.m., and the world's most beautiful religion doing its absolute worst

I. The Most Beautiful Thing Humans Ever Built

The Alhambra in Granada is the most beautiful building on earth. Not one of. The most. Every surface is a mathematical poem — arabesques that repeat into infinity because depicting God is forbidden and so they depicted infinity instead, which is the same thing, which is the whole point, which no one who built a cathedral ever understood.

Islamic geometry is what happens when you tell an entire civilization "you cannot draw a face" and they respond by inventing an art form that makes faces look boring. Every wall in the Alhambra is a proof of God written in tile. The Christians took Granada in 1492 and the first thing they did was build a fat ugly Renaissance palace in the middle of it, which is the most Christian thing that has ever happened.

"Wa-lā ghaliba illa-llāh" — and there is no victor but God. — Inscribed 9,000 times throughout the Alhambra. Nine thousand. They were not subtle about it.

The mosque is the greatest architectural form ever invented. A room where everyone faces the same direction. No pews, no hierarchy, no stage, no pulpit elevated above the congregation. Just a floor and a direction. The qibla. Every mosque on earth points to the same rock in the same desert in the same city. Two billion people oriented toward a single coordinate. This is either the most elegant distributed system ever designed or the most beautiful act of collective psychosis, and the difference between those two things is exactly zero.

II. The Call

The adhan at 4 a.m. in Southeast Asia is an act of acoustic violence that is also the most gorgeous sound a human throat has ever produced. You are asleep. You are deeply asleep. A man begins singing from a minaret and his voice is so beautiful that you cannot be angry even though you are now awake and you did not ask to be awake and you will not fall back asleep.

In Phuket the mosques compete. Southern Thailand is Muslim — people forget this, or never knew it, because they came for the beaches and the ping pong shows and not for the 4 a.m. theology. Five mosques within earshot, all slightly out of sync, so the adhan becomes a canon — the same words staggered across five voices across five minarets, and for about ninety seconds the whole city is a cathedral of sound that nobody asked for and nobody can escape and nobody wants to escape once it starts.

The Problem

The call to prayer is mandatory for the entire neighborhood. Not for the faithful — for everyone. The Buddhists. The tourists. The dogs. The atheists trying to sleep off a hangover from Bangla Road. Islam does not have a volume knob. Islam does not have an opt-out. Islam has a loudspeaker and a schedule and the schedule starts before the sun.

This is the fundamental thing about Islam that non-Muslims either love or cannot stand: it does not acknowledge the existence of your preference. The adhan is not a suggestion. Friday prayer is not an invitation. Ramadan is not optional even if you are traveling, even if you are sick (there are exceptions, but the exceptions prove the rule — they are exceptions to something). The entire religion is structured around the principle that your individual desire is not interesting. Submission. That's the literal name. That's what "Islam" means.

III. The Problem With the World's Best Religion

Islam peaked architecturally in the 14th century and intellectually in the 11th century and has been declining in both departments ever since, and the reason is not complicated: the Mutazilites lost.

Historical Context

The Mutazilites were the rationalists of early Islam. They argued that the Quran was created, not eternal — meaning it could be interpreted, contextualized, and reasoned about. They were doing Islamic Enlightenment in the 9th century, 800 years before Europe got around to it. They lost to the Asharites, who argued the Quran is the uncreated, eternal word of God, and therefore not subject to human reason. This is the single most consequential theological debate in human history and almost nobody in the West has heard of it.

When you declare a text eternal and uncreated, you freeze the civilization that reads it. The text cannot grow because it was never born. It cannot adapt because it was never contingent. Every question has already been answered, in the 7th century, in Arabic, and the answer is final. This is why Islamic architecture peaked and stopped. This is why the Islamic Golden Age ended. This is why al-Khwarizmi invented algebra and then algebra left the building and went to Europe. The building was locked from the inside.

The Alhambra was built by people who believed reason and revelation could coexist. The Saudi religious police are administered by people who believe reason is a threat to revelation. They are both Muslims. They are reading the same book. The difference is which commentary they trust, and the commentary that won is the one that says stop asking questions.

IV. The Women

Khadijah bint Khuwaylid was a wealthy merchant who employed Muhammad before she proposed to him. She was his boss. She asked him to marry her. She was 40. He was 25. She was the first person to accept Islam. She financed the entire religion out of her own trading profits. Without Khadijah's money and Khadijah's faith, there is no Islam. Period.

And then.

Fourteen hundred years later, women in Saudi Arabia needed a male guardian's permission to open a bank account until 2019. Women in Afghanistan cannot go to school. Women in Iran get beaten for showing hair. The religion that was literally bankrolled by a female CEO became the global leader in telling women to sit down and shut up. This is not a Western imposition of values. This is Islam failing to read its own origin story.

"The most perfect in faith amongst believers is he who is best in manner and kindest to his wife." — Hadith, Sahih al-Tirmidhi. This is Muhammad speaking. About wives. Read it again, Saudi Arabia.
The Honest Part

Christianity did the same thing. Mary Magdalene was the first witness to the resurrection — the single most important event in Christian theology was reported by a woman — and the church spent 2,000 years calling her a whore and telling women they can't be priests. Every religion does this. Islam is not special in its misogyny. Islam is special in the distance between what Muhammad actually said about women and what Muslims actually do to women. That distance is the widest gap in any religion. And the gap is the crime.

V. The Food

Muslim food is the best food. This is not debatable. This is not a matter of preference. The kebab is the greatest culinary invention since fire, and fire was necessary for the kebab, so really fire was just the kebab's prequel.

Halal slaughter requires a sharp knife, a single cut, the name of God spoken aloud, and the animal facing Mecca. Say what you want about the theology — the practical result is that the animal bleeds out fast, the meat is clean, and someone acknowledged that a life was being taken. The industrial chicken factory acknowledges nothing. The halal butcher at minimum says a name over the death. This is more than Tyson Foods has ever done.

The Kebab Continuum

The döner kebab was perfected by Turkish Muslims in Berlin. The shawarma was perfected by Levantine Muslims in Beirut. The seekh kebab was perfected by Mughal Muslims in Delhi. The satay was perfected by Malay Muslims in Southeast Asia. Every major kebab variant was invented by Muslims. Islam's single greatest contribution to human civilization is not algebra, not the Alhambra, not the preservation of Greek philosophy through the Dark Ages. It is the kebab. Algebra was inevitable. Someone would have gotten there. No one else was going to put lamb on a vertical spit and shave it into bread with garlic sauce. That required revelation.

The irony: the best Muslim food is served in the most secular Muslim cities. Istanbul, Beirut, Marrakech. The cities where the women show their hair and the men drink raki and the mosques are full on Friday and the bars are full on Saturday. The places where Islam coexists with everything Islam says it shouldn't coexist with. The food gets worse as the theology gets stricter. Saudi Arabia has the strictest Islam and the worst food. This is not a coincidence. Flavor requires freedom. The spice rack is a liberal institution.

VI. The Honest Islamophobia

Here is the islamophobic part, since we promised one:

The religion is stuck. It has been stuck since the Asharites won. Fourteen centuries of the smartest people in the room being told the room was finished in 632 AD. The mathematics stopped. The architecture stopped. The philosophy stopped. The poetry — the great Arabic and Persian and Urdu poetry, Rumi and Hafez and Ghalib — survived because poetry is too slippery for theologians to catch. Everything else froze.

The modern Islamic world produces almost no science, almost no technology, almost no philosophy, almost no literature that the rest of the world reads. This is not because Muslims are stupid — Muslims invented the university, the hospital, algebra, optics, and the concept of peer review. It is because the religion told its smartest people to stop being smart, and they listened, and now the civilization that preserved Aristotle while Europe was eating rats cannot build a semiconductor.

The Counter-Argument

Colonialism. The Sykes-Picot Agreement. The British drawing borders with rulers across populations that had governed themselves for a thousand years. The CIA overthrowing Mossadegh. The Soviets invading Afghanistan. The Americans invading Iraq. Every time an Islamic country approaches modernity, a Western power breaks it. This is true. This is also not the whole truth. Turkey was never colonized and still struggles. Iran had a revolution from the inside. The internal theological problem and the external colonial problem are both real, and they feed each other, and pointing at only one of them is dishonest.

The most islamophobic thing you can say about Islam is that it could be the greatest civilization on earth — it was the greatest civilization on earth — and it chose not to be. It chose the locked room over the open one. It chose the eternal text over the living interpretation. It built the Alhambra and then forgot how. And the Alhambra is still there, still the most beautiful building on earth, built by people who believed in reason and God simultaneously, which is the thing that Islam has lost and the thing that the world most needs Islam to find again.

VII. The 4 a.m. Version

You are in Patong. It is 4 a.m. The adhan starts and it is heartbreakingly beautiful. Five voices from five minarets singing the same words out of sync, and the words mean "God is the greatest, I testify that there is no god but God," and you don't believe any of it, and it doesn't matter, because belief is not the point. The point is that five men woke up before the sun to sing, and the city is a cathedral, and the sound is the most honest thing you will hear today.

The prostitutes on Bangla Road are closing down their bars. The muezzin is opening his throat. They are both working. They are both serving. Somewhere between the two of them — between the woman selling her body and the man selling his voice to God — is the entire human condition, and it is 4 a.m. in a beach town in Thailand, and the kebab cart on the corner is the only thing that makes sense.

"Allahu Akbar" — God is greater. Greater than what? Than everything. Than your preference, than your sleep, than your objection, than your entire concept of what should and should not happen at 4 a.m. Greater. That's it. That's the whole religion in two words. — The first line of every adhan, five times a day, for 1,400 years, whether you like it or not.
