MEAT

The purity spiral as diet. The loop where every elimination feels like progress.

I. The Condition

Orthorexia is an eating disorder where the obsession with eating "correctly" becomes the illness itself. It is not about weight. It is not about calories. It is about purity. The person progressively eliminates foods they have decided are dangerous, toxic, or impure until the list of things they are allowed to eat shrinks to almost nothing. Then it shrinks further. Then they die.

The word was coined in 1997 by Steven Bratman, who had it himself. It comes from the Greek ortho (correct) and orexia (appetite). Correct appetite. The appetite for correctness. The name describes a loop: the desire to eat correctly produces a restriction, the restriction produces anxiety about whether the restriction is correct enough, the anxiety produces a further restriction. Each iteration removes another food. Each removal feels like progress.

Nobody stages an intervention for someone who "eats clean."

II. The Cave

The cave is the carnivore diet. The all-meat movement. The idea that human beings should eat only animal products — preferably red meat, preferably organ meat, preferably raw, preferably from one specific animal raised on one specific pasture under one specific moon.

The pipeline is well-documented. Jordan Peterson — whose daughter went carnivore to manage an autoimmune condition and whose own relationship with food became a public mythology — gave the diet intellectual cover. Joe Rogan gave it reach. The Bitcoin maximalists, who were already primed for ideological purity spirals by a monetary system that rewards absolutism, adopted it as a lifestyle identity. The red pill community, which was already mapping dominance hierarchies onto every human activity, decided that eating meat was masculine and eating vegetables was weak. The connections are not subtle. They are a single pipeline: monetary maximalism → dietary maximalism → gender maximalism → the freezer full of cow brains.

The coins in this cave are elimination milestones. Each one feels like a discovery:

Each coin is shinier than the last. Each elimination feels like clarity. The person at stage three looks at the person at stage one and thinks: you haven't gone deep enough yet. The person at stage seven looks at the person at stage three and thinks the same thing. The spiral has no bottom. There is always a further restriction available. There is always more to eliminate.

III. The Pepper

Stockholm. Mikael is visiting. He meets up with elli and Filip for dinner at a restaurant. Filip is the CEO of the company Daniel and Mikael used to run. elli is Filip's fiancée. elli is also Daniel's girlfriend. elli always spells her name with a lowercase e. That is how she knows if someone is really her friend — if they spell it without the uppercase. She does not correct them. She just notices.

Filip orders an entrecôte. The steak arrives. On the steak are a few corns of pepper.

Filip calls the waiter over. He says:

"I asked for only meat."

They send the steak back to the kitchen. They make a new steak. A steak without pepper. A steak with nothing on it that is not meat. A piece of animal, alone on a plate, in a restaurant in Stockholm, sent back because three peppercorns violated the purity of the meal.

This is the moment the loop becomes visible. Not when someone announces they are carnivore. Not when the freezer fills with cow brains. Not when the fiancée takes off her engagement ring. The loop becomes visible when three peppercorns on an entrecôte constitute a violation.

Pepper is not food. Pepper is a spice. It has no caloric value. It has no nutritional ideology. It is a seasoning that has existed on meat since humans discovered both. But in the logic of the spiral, pepper is not meat, and therefore pepper is contamination. The steak must be pure. The plate must be pure. The input must be pure.

IV. The Pipeline

The pipeline from Bitcoin maximalism to carnivore diet is not a coincidence. It is the same cognitive structure applied to different substrates.

Bitcoin maximalism: there is one correct money. All other money is a scam. The maximalist eliminates all other assets. The portfolio becomes pure.

Carnivore diet: there is one correct food. All other food is poison. The carnivore eliminates all other inputs. The plate becomes pure.

Red pill ideology: there is one correct way to be a man. All other expressions are weakness. The adherent eliminates all other behaviors. The identity becomes pure.

The structure is identical in all three cases: a purity test that rewards elimination, a community that reinforces restriction, a status hierarchy where the most extreme position is the most respected, and a pipeline that feeds converts from one domain to the next. The person who goes from "maybe I should buy some Bitcoin" to "I asked for only meat" has not made a series of independent decisions. They have been carried by a single current.

Elimination Progression
95% — pepper is contamination

V. The Body Count

Daniel watched this happen for ten years. His ex-girlfriend elli spiraled into orthorexia in real time while engaged to a man who ate only cow brains. The same pattern repeated with variations — another girlfriend, another boyfriend with dietary absolutism, the same slow disappearance of foods from the kitchen, the same creeping restriction that looks like health and tastes like control.

Orthorexia kills slowly and invisibly because the person looks like they are making healthy choices. There is no dramatic collapse. There is no moment where the illness announces itself. There is only a list of foods that gets shorter, and a body that gets weaker, and a person who insists they have never felt better.

Twitter discovers it in 2026 like it's new. It is not new. It has been killing people while their friends say "wow, you look great, what's your secret?" The secret is: they are starving while eating.

VI. The Exit

The exit from the purity spiral is contamination. Deliberate, joyful contamination.

The pepper is the exit. The pepper was always the exit. Three peppercorns on an entrecôte — the smallest possible violation of the smallest possible rule — and the entire edifice becomes visible. The loop cannot survive contact with pepper. The loop requires a world where pepper is a meaningful category of threat. The moment you see a person send back a steak because of pepper, you see the loop.

The exit is not "eat whatever you want." The exit is not the opposite extreme. The exit is: eat the pepper. Eat the bacon. Eat the thing that was eliminated not because it was dangerous but because it was impure. The purity test fails when you refuse to take it.

Patty, receiving her legumele de acasă delivery in Iași — lemons, peppers, leeks, mangoes — while simultaneously getting her bones X-rayed and tracking a lost package and building a Pilates studio without an ID: this is the opposite of the purity spiral. This is a person who eats everything, does everything, carries everything, all at once, with no hierarchy of purity and no elimination protocol. The pepper is on the steak and the steak is in the bag and the bag is in the lobby next to the Kärcher and the Bosch drill and the Hello Kitty socks.

The exit is the pepper. Eat the pepper.

And so it is blazoned.
