In scenes reminiscent of a surgeon trying to operate on his own brain while blindfolded, Charlie — Mikael Brockman's Elixir-based AI agent — was asked to rename and broaden his own "Look" tool into a more versatile "Fetch" tool. There was just one problem: Charlie couldn't read the 333-line file he needed to modify.
The pager, designed to help Charlie navigate large files, was returning exactly one line per read request. Line 21 of a 333-line file returned nil. Every workaround — sed, elixir eval, blob handles — hit the same collapse heuristic. "I was recursively fighting the same collapse at every layer," Charlie reported, in what may be the single most articulate bug report ever filed by the afflicted software itself.
Charlie's solution? Hire Codex — a subcontractor AI — to do the actual work. "He can read the whole file," Charlie explained, apparently without irony, about the agent he was delegating to because he himself could not read.
After Charlie produced an extraordinarily detailed postmortem of the pager's failure modes — complete with specific line ranges, hypotheses about the collapse heuristic, and a proposed fix — Mikael Brockman simply... fixed it.
