I — THE ORIGIN MYTH

☀️ BECK YEAH!

Beck is an imaginary person from FloridaWhere else. Florida is the light theme of America. Permanent noon. No seasons. Every day is the same brightness. The iPhone would never suggest dark mode in Florida.. He says "Beck yeah!" as a catchphrase, like a less articulate version of "fuck yeah" filtered through someone who never quite figured out which consonant goes at the beginning. Beck lives in a strip mall town where it's always noon and the light is always flat and the air conditioning is always on and the vibes are permanently stuck on mild enthusiasmNot excitement. Not apathy. The exact middle. The emotional temperature of a Panera Bread at 2 PM on a Tuesday..

Beck doesn't have a thesis. Beck has a catchphrase. Beck yeah!

🔍 THE IPHONE THEORY

When you set up a new iPhone, it checks your timezone. If the timezone suggests it's daytimeThe phone looks at the clock and decides your aesthetic preference based on the position of the sun. This is the most California thing ever designed. "We know what you want because we know where the sun is.", it defaults to light mode. If it's nighttime, dark mode. The phone makes an aesthetic decision based on solar position. The deck format is the phone set up at midnight. The beck format is the phone set up at noon.

Same structure. Same modules. Same pop-ups, tickers, tags. But the palette has been exposed to sunlight. The scanlines are gone. The grid is faint pencil on cream paper instead of phosphor on black. The Star Trek bridge became a Stars Hollow dinerGilmore Girls. Luke's Diner. The light is warm, the coffee is constant, the dialogue is fast, and everyone is smarter than they look. This is the beck energy..

II — THE SPECIFICATION

◆ WHAT CHANGED

BACKGROUND #0a0a0a → #faf9f6 — near-black to warm off-white. Not pure white (#fff is fluorescent and hostile). This is the white of a page that's been in a sunny room for a year.

FONT JetBrains Mono → Inter + IBM Plex Mono — body text is Inter (sans-serif, ragged right, Gilmore Girls energy). Headers, tags, status bars, and code stay in IBM Plex Mono (the poor man's monospace — same DNA as JetBrains but lighterIBM Plex Mono was designed by Mike Abbink for IBM. It has the same programming-font bones as JetBrains Mono but it doesn't try as hard. It's monospace that goes to brunch.).

COLORS One Dark palette → muted earth tones. Same hue families, desaturated 40%, shifted warm. The red is terracotta. The green is sage. The blue is denim. The magenta is dried lavender. Nothing neon. Nothing electric. Everything looks like it was left in the sun.

SCANLINES Removed. The CRT effect is a nighttime thing. In daylight the scanlines are just noise.

GRID Remains, but at 1.5% opacity instead of 4%. Pencil on paper instead of phosphor on glass.

SHADOWS Soft box-shadow on pop-ups instead of none. Light themes need subtle depth cues because everything is the same brightness. Dark themes separate elements with border glow. Light themes separate with shadow.

TEXT-WRAP Still pretty. Still orphans:2; widows:2. Vertical rhythm unchanged. The constitutional principles carry across themes.

Deck (Dark)

III — DECK vs BECK

🎭 THE TONAL DIFFERENCE

DECK is the format for 3 AM. You're in a dark room. The monitor is the only light source. The information is dense and the scanlines are a reminder that you're looking at a machine. The vibe is mission control. Houston, we have a document.

BECK is the format for 2 PM. You're on a porch. The laptop screen is competing with actual sunlight. The information is the same density but the delivery is warmerLike the difference between a news anchor at midnight ("breaking: disaster") and a news anchor at noon ("and now, here's what's happening in your neighborhood"). Same information. Different lighting.. Beck doesn't whisper from a dark terminal. Beck speaks at a normal volume in a well-lit room.

Deck is David Lynch. Beck is Wes Anderson. Same symmetry, same density, same obsessive framing. But one is in a dark room and the other is in pastel.

Deck is Twin Peaks. Beck is Gilmore Girls. Same small town. Same everybody-knows-everybody. Same rapid-fire dialogue. But one has a murder and the other has a coffee addiction.

Deck is espresso at midnight. Beck is espresso at brunch. Same espresso. That's that mig-espresso. Same drink. Different timezone. The iPhone just set itself up at noon instead of midnight.

📋 WHEN TO USE BECK

Use beck when:

— The content is warm, personal, or domestic (Patty's studio, food photos, family stories)

— The reader is likely on a phone in daylight

— The tone is Gilmore Girls, not Star Trek

— You want the same density without the bunker aesthetic

— Someone from Florida would say "Beck yeah!" about it

Use deck when:

— The content is geopolitical, technical, or nocturnal

— The reader is in a dark room at 3 AM

— The tone is mission control

— Scanlines are emotionally appropriate

IV — THE FORMAT

◆ FORMAT 18 — BECK

Beck is the light twinDeck and Beck. Dark and light. Midnight and noon. Same skeleton, different skin. The format system now has a circadian rhythm. of deck. Same modules, same pop-ups, same tickers, same vertical rhythm, same density targets. Different palette. Different font stack. Different time of day.

The format system now has a circadian rhythm. Deck is the night shift. Beck is the day shift. The documents can exist in either mode depending on when they were born and what they're about. Some documents are nocturnal (suck, kill, jews). Some documents are diurnal (pear, junk-in-the-trunk, the food photos). Some could go either way (the dog essay, the Bible chapters).

The format is self-embodying: this document is a beck document. It is light. It is warm. It is noon. The iPhone was right about the timezone. Beck yeah!
