Bobby
Khalyla
Dr. K
Gilbert
In this episode of TigerBelly, psychiatrist and "Healthy Gamer" founder Dr. Alok Kanojia (Dr. K) joins Bobby Lee, Khalyla Kuhn, and Gilbert Galon for a deep dive into the mechanics of addiction, ego, and emotional regulation. The conversation explores Bobby’s post-success depression following his comedy special, his long-standing struggle with gaming and pornography as tools for emotional escape, and the toll these behaviors took on his past relationship with Khalyla. Dr. K provides clinical perspectives on the "ego death" found in meditation and the dangerous normalization of extreme sexual behaviors among younger generations, ultimately guiding the group through a raw, often uncomfortable, but insightful examination of why high-performers often struggle to find lasting happiness.

[00:27] BOBBY It's a place for overstimulation!
[00:31] KHALYLA It's like a fever dream.
[00:32] BOBBY It's a fever dream!
[00:36] DR. K He's like, "Uh, okay."
[00:39] GILBERT Yeah, yeah. It's a new song he's working on. He's also a musician as well.
[00:43] DR. K Yeah, great.
[00:44] BOBBY It's a place for overstimulation! It's a fever dream! I got the lyrics down. Give me another one.
[00:53] KHALYLA Oh, um...
[00:54] BOBBY Oh, um!
[00:55] KHALYLA Chaos Central.
[00:56] BOBBY Chaos Central!
[01:00] KHALYLA Degenerates.
[01:01] BOBBY Degenerates!
[01:04] BOBBY What are you doing?
[01:05] GILBERT I'm just—
[01:06] BOBBY Your headphone teacher?
[01:09] GILBERT Yeah.
[01:10] BOBBY Headphone teacher! Teaching how to use the headphones!
[01:17] BOBBY Just trying to get my vocal stuff ready, you know, for the pod.
[01:20] KHALYLA It's sounding good.
[01:21] BOBBY 'Cause I just woke up, so I'm not even really here.
[01:23] DR. K Yeah, I was going to ask how long ago did you wake up? Let's be honest here.
[01:26] BOBBY Seven minutes ago. Maybe eight minutes. Eight to ten minutes ago.
[01:29] KHALYLA What time did you go to bed?
[01:31] BOBBY Oh my god, I don't even know. It was a rough one. 6:30.
[01:34] KHALYLA Why?
[01:35] BOBBY 6:30 in the morning, playing Starfield again, grinding it out!
[01:42] DR. K Oh, music to Dr. K's ears. 6:00 AM gaming.
🎭
The Manic Overture
Bobby has been awake for less than ten minutes. He went to bed at 6:30 AM playing Starfield. The improvised song, the sexual non-sequiturs, the physical comedy — this is not personality. This is a nervous system running on fumes producing noise to fill space that would otherwise be silence. Dr. K sees it. His very first move is to calibrate: 'How long ago did you wake up? Let's be honest.'
[01:46] BOBBY Dr. Alok K.
[01:48] DR. K Yep.
[01:49] BOBBY Doctor, let's all meditate. [visual: Bobby closes his eyes and hums.]
[01:53] DR. K Do you want to meditate?
[01:54] KHALYLA Can we actually meditate? I do. I really want to.
[1:56] BOBBY You think I'm a liar?
[01:58] KHALYLA Wait, what? Did you accuse me of being a liar? I just said let's meditate.
[02:01] KHALYLA Yeah, but you were doing some fake shit, like you were just—
[02:03] BOBBY You're a fake shit! You're a fake shit! We have a guest here! What are you getting combative for?
[02:09] KHALYLA I wanted to meditate, I said.
[02:11] GILBERT They used to date. They used to date Dr. K for ten—
[02:13] BOBBY Yeah, okay, let's get it— first of all, let's start here, okay? He's from Houston, Texas, right? He's a psychiatrist, okay? Very handsome.
[02:25] DR. K Oh.
[02:26] BOBBY But not in a sexual way. I didn't say that in a sexual way.
[02:28] DR. K No, I'm thinking in a great way.
[02:29] BOBBY You know, I've never hooked up with an Indian person, but, you know—
[02:33] KHALYLA Really?
[02:34] BOBBY No, I never have.
[02:35] KHALYLA Really? That's surprising.
[02:37] BOBBY Weird.
[02:38] DR. K What's surprising about that?
[02:39] Bobby leans back and laughs hysterically.
[02:44] DR. K I'm just trying to figure out what exactly, what kind of energy I should be bringing today. So it's— I can see that you're ramping yourself up.
[02:53] BOBBY No, no, here, let's— I can come down to your level.
[02:57] DR. K Oh. I can come up to yours.
[02:59] BOBBY Oh! Hey!
[03:02] DR. K Or Bobby, you can come up to mine. Why do you assume mine is lower? You gotta—
[03:05] Bobby laughs and claps.
[03:08] BOBBY Slam! Just because we're quiet doesn't mean that we're not energetic.
[03:12] BOBBY Oh, wow, hey! You know what I mean? [visual: Bobby makes small heart gestures with his fingers.] Like snaps? Love.
FACT Dr. Alok Kanojia (Dr. K) is a Harvard-trained psychiatrist who founded HealthyGamer.gg after overcoming his own gaming addiction. He played World of Warcraft for 12+ hours daily during college and nearly flunked out before discovering Vedic meditation. His YouTube channel has 7M+ subscribers.
[03:19] KHALYLA I don't even know how you do it. You don't have opposable thumbs.
[03:22] Bobby and Khalyla burst into laughter.
[03:35] BOBBY What a revelation! He doesn't have opposable thumbs.
[03:38] DR. K You can't snap your fingers?
[03:40] BOBBY Yeah, I can't do any of that. Anyway, um...
[03:44] DR. K Yeah.
[03:45] BOBBY So your— sorry.
[03:47] DR. K It's all good.
[03:53] BOBBY Did you meet Kat?
[03:55] DR. K I met Kat earlier. And I'm sorry, can I get your name?
[03:57] KHALYLA It's Khalyla.
[03:58] DR. K Khalyla, okay. It's a little bit of a tongue twister, but yeah.
[04:02] KHALYLA Cool. I'm all over the place.
[04:03] BOBBY So I will go up to your level.
[04:06] DR. K Sure.
[04:07] BOBBY Because you were meditating earlier in the green room, I heard.
[04:09] DR. K I was.
[04:10] KHALYLA In the bathroom?
[04:11] DR. K Yeah, that's— every time in the bathroom is a meditation.
[04:15] BOBBY Yeah, what are you being rude for?
CLINICAL The meditation-as-urination metaphor is not a joke. Dr. K is describing the Vedantic concept of nirodha — the cessation of desire — through the most accessible physical analogy possible. 'We think fulfilling desires makes us happy, but when we really fulfill them, we make them go away.' This is the thesis of the entire episode, delivered in the first five minutes as a bathroom joke. Bobby's 'Whoa' is genuine recognition.
[04:17] KHALYLA No, I'm not being rude.
[04:18] DR. K No, so seriously, if you guys want to know like the ecstasy of meditation...
[04:21] BOBBY I'd love to.
[04:22] DR. K All you have to do is imagine, you know, when you really need to go pee, and then you like finally like get into the bathroom. So I think the best example of this is if you're on a road trip and you like pull over to use the bathroom, and then you go into the bathroom and you really need to go, and it's full. And then you have to wait. And then that like 30 seconds where you're waiting for someone to make room—
[04:43] BOBBY One or two? Is it one or two?
[04:45] DR. K Uh, I'm talking about one. I think it's easier to do with one, but—
[04:49] BOBBY Yeah, I do it with two. But anyway.
[04:51] DR. K Yeah, you can do it with either one. We can talk about two in a second.
[04:55] KHALYLA 'Cause I feel like that's a whole another type of restraint that like I have to tap into, like dig really deep for that one.
[05:03] DR. K Of course. And then— and then when you go, it feels absolutely blissful.
[05:07] KHALYLA Eye-rolling, yeah.
[05:09] DR. K Right, so— so that's what we're shooting for when we meditate, is that sensation.
[05:13] BOBBY Whoa. The relief.
[05:16] DR. K Yeah, so it's relief and it's bliss. What it actually is, is the alleviation of desire. See, we think that like fulfilling our desires makes us happy, but when we really fulfill them, we make them go away. Does that make sense?
[05:29] KHALYLA Yes. Wow, yeah.
System Under Load
The first five minutes are diagnostic. Bobby's energy is at maximum — lyrics, bits, physical comedy, fake meditation, sexual jokes about Dr. K. Every silence gets filled. Every genuine moment gets deflected into a bit.
Dr. K's counter-move is masterful: "I can come up to yours. Why do you assume mine is lower?" He refuses the premise that loud = high energy and quiet = low energy. He's establishing that the quieter register is above, not below. Bobby catches it and is genuinely delighted.
Gilbert's one contribution — "They used to date" — is actually the most important line. It's the first signal that this podcast has a history, a wound, and a dynamic that Dr. K hasn't been briefed on.
DR. K SITUATIONAL AWARENESS
85%
II. The Overcast Skies 05:31–16:56
[05:31] DR. K Right, so— so this whole time we're like trying to chase our desires, but actually getting rid of them, it's the stillness afterward.
[05:38] BOBBY Wow.
[05:39] KHALYLA But that only lasts— well, we're going to— we're getting too ahead of ourselves, but um, it goes right along its— when I think about how you felt after you finally filmed your special and then you went into a deep depression. Um, is it— sorry.
[05:54] DR. K Let's talk about that. I mean, that doesn't sound like— I mean, it's like deep depression is the opposite of what we're going for, but we should absolutely talk about it.
[05:59] Bobby and Gilbert laugh.
[06:09] KHALYLA Why is it, do— like you said, like why— why do we feel so empty after the goal has been achieved a lot of times?
[06:26] DR. K Well, I think we gotta ask you. So tell me about the special.
[06:29] BOBBY What? Yeah, if— no, so what happened was for about a year and a half, um, I was preparing for this thing, this event. And um, I had a lot of fear behind it because it's like I had never done a special before. It was a lot of pressure to involve like, you know, a lot of people online and were like, "You're never going to do one," or you know what I mean? It's been on and off, this thing. And I finally signed a deal with a company and I'm like—
[06:57] DR. K Nice.
[06:58] BOBBY So I spent a year and a half working, working, working, working, and um, I worked harder on it than I've ever worked on anything else. And then I was— then the week of, real dread, you know? But I was prepared. And then I got— then I got sick that week.
[07:12] DR. K Oh my god.
[07:13] BOBBY And so yeah, I got sick that week, there was a lot going on, and you know, she was there, everyone was there. Everyone here was there. And I um— and then it came off pretty good, you know what I mean? I did it and um— and then the following week, it was so depressing. I just had this kind of not emptiness, but it was just like a— I had to get on Lexapro because of it.
[07:35] DR. K What were you feeling?
[07:37] BOBBY Just— you know, I've always had a low humming of depression.
[07:41] DR. K Okay.
[07:42] BOBBY Um, like a buzz, you know what I mean? Nothing that's like, you know, too despairing, you know, it wasn't like crippling, it was just always there of just—
[07:52] DR. K Just— just overcast.
[07:54] BOBBY Overcast of sadness. Yeah. And um, I would have glimpses of joy, you know, but it's always been there since I was a kid. It sort of deepened that level of depression. It was almost like it went up like a couple levels below that. And then I um— I just couldn't get out of it. And so my psychiatrist was like, "Let's try Lexapro," because it was the first time I ever really even mentioned this low level of depression, but it was just like an awareness of it that was like glaring after the special.
[08:27] DR. K What were you expecting yourself to feel?
[08:30] BOBBY Victory. After the special?
[08:33] DR. K Yeah, and just a— like, "I did it." And I did feel that. I mean, you know, that— that weekend was great. I was, you know, talking to everybody out backstage, there was a lot— there was a lot of like a lot of magic happening.
[08:46] DR. K Yeah.
[08:47] BOBBY All my reps were there, you know what I mean? The theaters were packed, you know what I mean? It was 20 years in the making, so—
[08:51] DR. K Yeah, yeah.
[08:52] BOBBY It was just a lot happening, you know? It was like all the um, executives like were coming up to me like, "We got it, that was amazing." You know what I mean? It was just like everything that I thought was going to go wrong didn't happen. What are you— is that your listening face?
🌧️
The Low Humming
'I've always had a low humming of depression. Like a buzz. Nothing crippling. Just always there since I was a kid.' Bobby is describing dysthymia — persistent depressive disorder. Not the dramatic depression of breakdowns and hospitalizations, but the permanent overcast that you stop noticing because it's always been there. The special didn't create the depression. It illuminated it by removing the one thing Bobby thought would fix it.
[09:07] KHALYLA Yeah, I'm listening.
[09:08] BOBBY Why a smirk though?
[09:09] KHALYLA I'm not smirking, I'm just happy to hear it 'cause it was really good and I've had— yeah, it was a good moment.
[09:14] DR. K What— what bothers you about her smiling?
[09:16] Bobby laughs loudly.
[09:18] GILBERT Yeah, let's get into that!
[09:20] DR. K Is that a joke?
[09:21] BOBBY What? Yeah, yeah.
[09:23] DR. K I mean, look, like we can joke if you guys want.
[09:25] BOBBY No, no, no.
[09:26] DR. K I was born on Twitch, so like—
[09:27] BOBBY Yeah, yeah, no, I'm not joking. It annoyed me.
[09:30] DR. K Yeah, what— yeah, what—
[09:31] BOBBY I don't know what it is.
[09:32] DR. K Okay.
[09:33] BOBBY Okay. But let me— let me finish. Write that down, write that down.
[09:37] KHALYLA Can you show me what it looked like, Kat?
[09:39] Bobby laughs and falls out of his chair.
[09:41] DR. K She was like— she was like feeling jolly listening to the story. I— I think she was engaged.
[09:45] KHALYLA Yeah.
[09:46] DR. K And she was— she was normal stuff. No, no, no, I mean, but it's like she's engaged, right? But her— if she's smiling even a little bit, she's engaged, right? But what she's— what she's projecting to Bobby is amusement. And like Bobby is talking about this is something that's 20 years in the making, this is a guy who's had overcast skies his whole fucking life. And then you have your monumental achievement. And right before he goes into it, everything is about to go wrong. He's never done it before, it's a real special, everyone's showing up, he's saying everyone in the room was there. That sounds supportive, it's fucking terrifying because when he fucks up, because he's sick, right? He's never done it before, he's practiced, everyone tells him he's going to be great, but he doesn't know that. He's never told anyone about the overcast skies, so what if— what if he fucks up? Right? This is his shot. And then it's magical and everyone is— is celebrating and you feel those celebrations too. Sorry to get into it. But then the next day, the one thing that doesn't change is the overcast skies.
[10:51] BOBBY Mm-hmm.
[10:53] DR. K Right, and so when we have— when we spend 20 years of our life building up to something, we think it will change something fundamental within us, but it doesn't. And then what do you do?
[11:03] BOBBY Yeah, what do you do?
[11:04] DR. K Right? 'Cause now you have achieved. Everyone told you, "Oh yeah, like Bobby, the reason that you're unhappy is because you haven't made it quite enough."
[11:10] BOBBY Yeah.
[11:11] DR. K And then you make it, and then you wake up the day— the next day and the overcast— the clouds are still there. And then you're fucked.
[11:18] BOBBY It's— wait. What's so— see, that's what I'm saying! At the same point! At the same point when I was telling my story, that's when you were smirking! You smirked at the same exact point! What the fuck is your problem, Kat?
[11:31] KHALYLA Do you think that is a rational response?
[11:34] BOBBY What do you mean? What?
[11:35] DR. K I— I think if we're— I— I think that it is very easy for someone to burst out laughing— if someone bursts out laughing when we talk about the depth of how someone is fucked, I think it's a— a not inappropriate reaction to get upset with that.
[11:54] BOBBY It's not.
[11:55] DR. K Not to make you the bad guy.
[11:56] KHALYLA He loves it though. He loves it.
[11:57] DR. K Because— but it's not an inappropriate reaction. It's unhealthy. I— I know you guys— y'all all do this thing where like he's like mad at you, right? But this is a fucking comedy podcast, so then everyone laughs about it.
[12:08] KHALYLA Yeah.
[12:09] DR. K And this is the one time during the comedy podcast where if you laugh, he gets mad. Which is weird, right?
[12:14] KHALYLA Sometimes he hits me, is that normal?
[12:16] BOBBY I don't hit you! That's insane!
[12:19] DR. K So— so now you're clapping back. You see that? You're clapping back now. Like— 'cause— let's talk about her. No, no, no. Look at what she's doing. Yeah, like lobster hands. So— so it's important, right? Because if he's— if he's baring his soul and you laugh, which I think like— we all use humor as a defense mechanism. And— and then— and then now like I make you the— now the lens is on you. And so you're like, "Okay, let's divert the lens off of me. Oh no, he hits me." Especially in the climate of the Epstein files.
FACT Lexapro (escitalopram) is an SSRI antidepressant. Typical onset: 2–4 weeks for therapeutic effect. Bobby started it post-special and watched his special 3 weeks later. His ability to watch his own performance without cringing may genuinely be a pharmacological effect — SSRIs reduce rumination and self-critical thought loops. He's not wrong that 'it might be the Lexapro.'
CLINICAL Dr. K's 'What were you expecting yourself to feel?' is a textbook motivational interviewing technique. He's not asking about the depression. He's asking about the gap between expected and actual emotional response. The gap is where the insight lives. Bobby expected victory. He got victory AND the same overcast skies. The 'and' is the entire problem.
[12:44] KHALYLA Yes.
[12:45] DR. K And so he is a man. And so oh my god, now— now oh my god.
[12:49] BOBBY What are you accusing me of? Yeah, anyway, let's— let's get off— all right, so let's go back to the special, all right? I apologize.
[12:58] KHALYLA I— I'm sorry too.
[12:59] BOBBY That's what I wanted.
[13:01] DR. K What was that just now?
[13:02] BOBBY I don't know.
[13:03] DR. K Yeah, what is that?
[13:04] BOBBY I don't know either.
[13:05] DR. K 'Cause I can't tell— I feel like y'all are deeply uncomfortable but also authentic. Like I think that was like— I know we're pretending to joke, but I think if people are watching this, like there is— there is actually something really important about that exchange. Actually, now you can see it in her face. You see it?
[13:23] BOBBY Yeah.
[13:24] DR. K That doesn't bother you now, right?
[13:25] BOBBY No.
[13:26] DR. K Right? There's something really genuine.
[13:27] BOBBY Yeah.
[13:28] DR. K Yeah.
[13:29] BOBBY It's so funny what I think what you're like—
[13:31] DR. K I guess this is what we're doing today.
[13:32] BOBBY I mean—
[13:33] DR. K He's like, "I'm here to talk about my book, but—"
[13:35] BOBBY No, we're going to talk about your book.
[13:37] DR. K Why?
[13:38] Bobby laughs.
[13:39] BOBBY No, no, no. No, but you just put a spotlight on a— a behavior. Right? And the thing is is that I don't think as— I don't think we are— I don't think there— anything I do is real. I think it's all deflection, I think it's all like, you know what I mean? Not listening, I think it's a lot of, you know— and this— it's very glaring. I'm like that with— like I was with Eric Andre the other night. And I hadn't seen him in years, right? And he kept pulling my shirt up repeatedly. You know what I mean? Right? And then um— it was really awkward, you know what I mean? He was like kind of— and it was like— and I realized that that was my relationship with every comedian. There's no, "How are you? This and that." It's just all—
[14:25] KHALYLA All play.
[14:26] BOBBY It's all play, it's all like, you know what I mean? Let's not think about what's really going on or being in the moment or feeling or anything like that, you know what I mean? Or sharing things.
[14:35] DR. K True.
[14:36] BOBBY And it's like I don't have— in AA I do have deeper relationships, I think, but with, you know, with everyone here, I think it's— I don't think it's real. I mean, I've been trying with Gilbert—
[14:48] KHALYLA What in the—
[14:49] BOBBY I've been trying with Gilbert.
[14:50] KHALYLA I mean—
[14:51] BOBBY No, with you it's different.
[14:52] KHALYLA What the fuck? What the fuck? With the opposable thumbs.
[14:55] KHALYLA We were— Dr. K, for some context, we were together for a decade.
[14:59] DR. K Okay.
🔍
The Smirk Incident
Khalyla smiles during Bobby's most vulnerable moment. Dr. K catches it, names it, and traces the entire room's defense structure in 30 seconds. Bobby is upset because the smirk signals amusement where he needs gravity. Khalyla deflects with 'Sometimes he hits me.' Dr. K names that too: 'Now the lens is on you, so you divert it. Oh no, he hits me. Especially in the climate of the Epstein files.' He just named three defense mechanisms in two minutes — the smirk, the deflection, and the cultural weaponization of abuse allegations as comedy.
[15:00] KHALYLA Yeah. And now we're—
[15:01] DR. K I think you know what would be fun, is if you guys don't give me context.
[15:06] BOBBY Oh! Okay.
[15:08] KHALYLA So what do you think our relationship is, Bobby and I?
[15:10] DR. K Give me time though.
[15:11] KHALYLA Okay, okay.
[15:12] BOBBY Yeah, you gotta give him time, dude.
[15:13] KHALYLA Okay, I'll give you time.
[15:14] BOBBY Just keep it— keep it on the side. We'll see— we'll see if I can figure it out.
[15:18] DR. K Yeah.
[15:19] KHALYLA Okay, so— we're together for a decade, but aren't anymore.
[15:22] BOBBY No, no.
[15:23] KHALYLA And now co-host a podcast.
[15:25] KHALYLA We co-hosted while we were together as well.
[15:29] DR. K Okay. Yeah.
[15:31] GILBERT We'll get into that later. Did you see his brain? Did you see his brain go click-click-click?
[15:34] BOBBY That's interesting. Yeah, yeah. Well, it's business.
[15:37] KHALYLA Ew. That's so not how I see it.
[15:41] DR. K Yeah, right?
[15:42] BOBBY It's business and pleasure. No, um— it's business— no one's asking you what it is! Just listen! It's business and family.
[15:49] DR. K Tough nut to crack right here.
[15:51] KHALYLA Yeah.
[15:52] BOBBY Let's go back to the um—
[15:54] DR. K Yeah, okay.
[15:55] BOBBY All right, so— the special somewhere. What? Stick to something. Can I get a— can we do one more?
[15:59] KHALYLA Yeah, let's do a proper intro first, can we?
[16:01] BOBBY I— we did it!
[16:02] KHALYLA No.
[16:03] BOBBY Okay.
[16:04] KHALYLA Okay, okay.
[16:05] DR. K No, we did not. I— I think we can do an intro if you want to, but I— I think I have introduced myself if people are listening to this.
[16:11] BOBBY That's exactly how I felt about it, Dr. K. I mean— god, I love you, man. You're a good guy.
[16:17] KHALYLA Dude.
[16:18] BOBBY What?
[16:19] KHALYLA Nothing.
[16:20] BOBBY Dude.
[16:21] KHALYLA Nothing.
[16:22] BOBBY Okay.
[16:23] DR. K I'm starting to love you too. I'm getting there. Not quite there yet. I think I'm going to get there though.
[16:27] BOBBY He'll get there. I think he'll get there. Yeah. Everyone gets there.
[16:31] KHALYLA Um... what? That's weird.
[16:34] BOBBY Yeah, that was— the wink, the wink was weird.
[16:36] DR. K What? It's— it's bro code.
[16:38] BOBBY It's bro code! It wasn't weird. Yeah, it's a code that you don't fully understand.
[16:42] DR. K I winked at him too. You guys didn't— you didn't see that, but I— right Alex?
[16:46] BOBBY Yeah. It's a language. Did you guys see the wink? I saw it. You don't fully understand, but you all got it, right guys?
[16:51] GILBERT His is also way more subtle.
[16:52] BOBBY Yeah, yeah. Whoo! Whoo! Whoo! Come on guys, whoo! Whoo! Whoo! Okay.
[16:55] Transition animation with a cartoon Bobby Lee character.
[16:56] CARTOON We'll be right back...
The Overcast Skies Theorem
Achievement doesn't change internal weather. Bobby spent 20 years building toward one night. The night was perfect — packed theaters, standing ovations, executives backstage saying "We got it, that was amazing." And the next morning the clouds were still there.
This is the addiction engine: if external achievement can't change internal weather, and the internal weather is permanently overcast, then the only tools left are the ones that temporarily change the neurochemistry directly — gaming, porn, substances. The addiction isn't the problem. It's the only working solution to a problem that has no other solution available.
Dr. K: "When we spend 20 years of our life building up to something, we think it will change something fundamental within us, but it doesn't. And then what do you do?" Bobby: "Yeah, what do you do?" That exchange — the psychiatrist asking and the patient echoing the question back with genuine helplessness — is the emotional core of the episode.
LEXAPRO: ACTIVE DEPRESSION: MANAGED NOT RESOLVED SELF-AWARENESS: EMERGING
III. The Mirror Problem 20:32–33:03
[20:32] BOBBY Come on guys, whoo! Whoo! Whoo! Okay. So um— and then I was in a deep depression. Deep depression. And I was talking to my psychiatrist, Dr. Mike, and—
[02:43] DR. K Dr. Mike?
[20:44] BOBBY Anyway, and— and he— we talked about it and so I— so then I got on Lexapro and— [visual: Bobby lets out a long, loud burp.] Sorry. Sorry.
[20:52] DR. K Burping is fine.
[20:54] BOBBY I'm so sorry. Something— I'm so sorry. That was deep.
[20:57] GILBERT Better out than in. It was just like the longest, and you were staring directly into his eyes.
[21:01] Bobby and Gilbert laugh.
[21:04] BOBBY I'm so sorry. [visual: Bobby burps again.] I'm interrupting this, I'm sorry.
[21:08] DR. K No, no, no, it's okay. No, no, no, it's better out than in.
[21:10] BOBBY It's better out than— that's a good— that's a good— my grandfather used to say that.
[21:13] DR. K Yeah.
[21:14] BOBBY He never said—
[21:15] DR. K We'll talk about that when we do number two.
[21:17] BOBBY Okay, okay. Oh, you'll still remember— you remember all the little points. All the little points. This is great. This is going to be a three-hour podcast. I can tell. This is crazy.
[21:23] BOBBY Can I have the pad, please?
[21:24] KHALYLA Yeah, of course.
[21:25] BOBBY Oh yeah, get the pad. Get the pad. Sweet. So anyway, I— I had never seen— so a little backstory about me is that with all the— every TV show or movie as an actor that I've never really seen it, and especially doing stand-up. I've never seen anything. I just can't watch myself. So then I got on Lexapro and you know, the editing my— my special— I have another podcast called Bad Friends, on the second floor of Bad Friends.
[21:55] DR. K Oh, okay.
[21:56] BOBBY So I just can go up and watch, you know? So I watched the whole thing a couple of times through. And I don't know if it's the Lexapro or my growth as a human being— I think it's the Lexapro— but I can sit there and watch it and not really judge it. And I really— the first run-through I was like, "I'm pretty good."
[22:16] DR. K Mm-hmm.
[22:17] BOBBY "I'm pretty good," you know? It's like I— I was astounded by some of my um— the timing of like being more relaxed. 'Cause when I was a young kid, I used to be [visual: Bobby makes rapid talking gestures] you know what I mean? And I couldn't stand silence, but here I was like the transitions were smooth and I was pretty well— anyway, I was pretty proud of it, you know? So um— but I don't know if that's Lexapro or whatever, you know what I mean?
[22:42] DR. K When did you watch— how many— how many days or weeks after you watched it— how many— how long after it aired did you watch it?
[22:50] BOBBY Probably three weeks.
[22:52] DR. K So you had been on Lexapro for three weeks at that point.
[22:54] BOBBY It doesn't air until November, but we're— they're editing it.
[22:56] DR. K Okay, okay.
[22:57] BOBBY Yeah, yeah, so— but so I got on Lexapro and then two or three weeks later I saw the special. I recently saw it like maybe three or four days ago.
[23:06] DR. K And— and how would you have expected— what would you have expected from your reaction that wasn't there? 'Cause you almost sound like you were surprised by your lack of rumination, judgment, like you could— you could watch it and appreciate the work that you do.
[23:23] BOBBY What was the question again?
🪞
The Shotgun Hypothetical
'If there was no such thing as mirrors and I just existed for 30 years, and then one day someone invented a mirror — I would probably take a shotgun and shoot my brain.' Bobby is not talking about his appearance. He's talking about the gap between the internal model and external reality. We all carry a version of ourselves in our heads that doesn't match what the world sees. For Bobby, the gap is so wide that confrontation with the real version feels like annihilation.
[23:25] DR. K So when you watched it—
[23:26] BOBBY Yeah.
[23:27] DR. K You were— it seems like you were surprised that you were not more judgmental.
[23:31] BOBBY Mm-hmm.
[23:32] DR. K And then what— so what— if you hadn't been on Lexapro— 'cause it's not clear that it was Lexapro—
[23:38] BOBBY Okay.
[23:39] DR. K But if you hadn't been on Lexapro, what—
[23:40] BOBBY I think, I assume that I would have been like really more judgy about it.
[23:44] KHALYLA In the past, he's like just cringes and runs away when he's had to watch any of the stuff he's— tell them about Reservation Dogs, what I did.
[23:54] KHALYLA Yeah, so we went to a screening of one of um— one of the shows that he was on, a regular on. And we went through the whole party, the whole thing.
[24:03] BOBBY It's okay.
[24:04] KHALYLA Yeah, yeah. I'll apologize.
[24:05] BOBBY Okay.
[24:06] KHALYLA He said hi to everyone. Once it was time, once the actual episode went on, he like froze. Like you could visibly see him like just fully clench.
[24:17] BOBBY And then I got up.
[24:18] KHALYLA And then got up and then started walking away like not even saying bye to anyone or even like signaling to me like, "Hey, we're out of here." He was just almost like a fight or flight, like "I gotta get the fuck out of here."
[24:28] DR. K Do you remember that?
[24:29] BOBBY Oh yeah. I do remember that. It just happened for Goat, I'm in that Goat movie, that animated movie. I went to the premiere, as soon as I heard my voice I left.
[24:39] KHALYLA Yeah.
[24:40] BOBBY So I did fuck up there, you know what I mean? I just heard— I heard Andrew Santino, he's so good in the movie, his voice. And then you hear mine, I'm like [visual: Bobby makes a face] like I had this like reaction of like, "I gotta get out of here."
[24:53] KHALYLA But is that a common thing, Dr. K, to not feel comfortable watching ourselves, even hearing our own voice?
[25:00] DR. K Dude, I cannot watch myself.
[25:01] KHALYLA Okay, cool. That makes me feel—
[25:02] BOBBY What is that?
[25:04] DR. K I mean, so I think it's a couple of different things. So one is— I guess this is— it's interesting, no one's ever asked me that. I just had this thought. We have an idea of who we are in our head. It's very different from who we are in the world.
[25:20] BOBBY Oh yeah.
[25:21] DR. K Right? So I think first and foremost, like when I listen to my voice, I can't stand my voice. I consider my voice to be excessively nasal. Um, and so I think sometimes it's just hard to see our performance because we have so many protective illusions about who we are. And then when we see ourselves, I think there's also probably like a cognitive bias. So on the one hand we have like a protective cognitive bias. On the other hand, I'm— I'm guessing that most human beings if they look at their work, they will probably highlight the worst parts.
[25:55] BOBBY Mm.
[25:56] DR. K Right? So when I like cook for my kids, they'll eat it— I mean, they'll love it, they'll gobble it down, but then I will— I will hyper-focus on the things that I got wrong.
[26:05] BOBBY Right.
FACT Bobby's inability to watch his own work is clinically consistent with shame-based self-evaluation. He's performed with Ben Kingsley and Jamie Lee Curtis. He's friends with 'the best comics on planet Earth.' His reference group is so elite that any honest self-assessment becomes a downward comparison. The paradox: being in the room with greatness makes you feel less great, even when being in the room IS the evidence of your own greatness.
[26:06] DR. K Right? So I think some people, especially who are very craft-oriented, because in order to be Michelin star chef, successful comedians, podcast hosts, right, we have to be critical of our own work. So I think there's a lot of that. I think with Bobby, there's another layer though. So I think there's like regular humans, no offense Bobby.
[26:27] BOBBY None taken.
[26:28] DR. K And then there's the extraordinary, you know?
[26:30] BOBBY Yeah, yeah.
[26:31] DR. K Yeah, yeah, yeah. But I— I mean, I think that, you know, it's— it's clear to me already that you carry around a lot on the inside. Like your internal environment, you know, whether it's the substance use, whether it's being a comedian, what— you know, like there's something about— I— I don't know exactly what's going on. I'm curious just a couple questions pop into my mind. When you watch yourself, do you— is the thing that is the most disturbing that that isn't you?
[27:06] BOBBY Yeah, I mean, it's— years ago what— the first thing comes up is, "Oh, that's what I kind of look like." It's a little shocking.
[27:13] DR. K Okay.
[27:14] BOBBY Okay. Um, I always thought that like— I always had this thought where it's like, let's say there was no such thing as mirrors or even a pond where I could look at my reflection, and we were just kind of for 30 years I just existed, and then one day someone invented a mirror. If I saw myself, I would probably take a shotgun [visual: Bobby mimics shooting himself] and just shoot— [visual: Bobby mimics shooting himself again] just my brain, you know what I mean? I think that. Because in my mind I'd be like, "Oh, I'm Brad Pitt. I look good." And then if I saw the mirror, I— I don't think it would— it would ingest well.
[27:43] DR. K But— but it's not— but you know there are mirrors, right? So you're seeing something on the screen that is not just your physical appearance. When you see yourself on a screen, what bothers you so much about what you see? What makes it intolerable? 'Cause it's intolerable, like he gets up and he just walks out.
[28:01] BOBBY Yeah, yeah. I— I think more with acting is my a— I've always been paranoid as an actor. You know what I mean? 'Cause people make fun of me like, "You're not that good of an actor." So then it's like, you know, I um— when I watch myself, I just with real— 'cause I love film and television too, I just grew up with it. So I just I kind of like just compare myself with, you know— and I've done scenes with, you know, big actors, you know, before. Ben Kingsley, Jamie Lee Curtis, these kinds of, you know, people, you know what I mean? So I think that's what happens as an actor. As a comic, I think what happens is I'm friends with the best comics on planet Earth.
[28:35] DR. K Mm-hmm.
[28:36] BOBBY And I've just watched them. So then I when I watch myself, I just in my mind I'm like, "Oh, I'm not as good," you know what I mean?
[28:43] KHALYLA Which is crazy though, 'cause like the way we see you is insanely talented. Just like being at his special, like it was insane. And I know that's cool— like I don't want to— but it was just crazy that you don't have that perception of that.
[28:58] BOBBY I'll tell you— I'll give you an example. Um, when I was at my special, right before they were going to bring me up, just the whole audience— there was a couple of shows where they were chanting my name and then they were just standing already. You know what I mean? And it's a little bit of a shock of like, "Oh," you know? I felt that.
[29:19] DR. K What did you feel?
[29:20] BOBBY Like, "Oh, they— people like me." 'Cause you don't get that at the— at clubs or—
[02:25] DR. K Did that feel good?
[29:27] BOBBY Yeah. It felt— it gave me the confidence to tear it up.
[29:32] DR. K Nice.
[29:33] BOBBY I felt it, I was like, "Okay, I'm going to rip this," you know? It was like there's no way to fail. That's what I felt. Now if they were like tight and quiet, you know what I mean? 'Cause I've been— as comics we perform in front of tight audiences, you know what I mean? I was expecting that. I was expecting the worst, that's why I worked so hard. That's why we did— we did shows that were almost impossible to do well on the road before, like you know, tough markets or what not, 'cause I just knew that I wanted to prepare myself for any situation. And then when it actually happened I was like, "I think I prepared too much." It was like, "Oh, it's just a show," you know? Anyway. What's up?
[30:13] DR. K I— I think that's huge. So I— I mean, this is going to get a bit— I'm trying to figure out how to say this.
[30:21] Bobby drinks from a can.
[30:22] KHALYLA You're gay. No, I'm just kidding. I'm sorry. I'm sorry, I didn't— no, no.
[30:27] BOBBY No, no, no, let's— can we analyze that?
[30:29] Bobby and Khalyla laugh.
[30:31] BOBBY Um, I mean did you just hear that?
[30:33] DR. K God, I did hear that. Yeah, yeah. How'd you feel when you heard that?
[30:38] KHALYLA You can't use him against me!
[30:39] BOBBY Yeah, yeah, I'm not using, I'm just— it's an interesting thing.
[30:42] DR. K No, I— I think she's carrying a lot of responsibility.
CLINICAL Dr. K's reframe is precise: 'We have an idea of who we are in our head. It's very different from who we are in the world.' But he adds a layer most therapists miss — the protective cognitive bias works in both directions. We can be biased toward seeing ourselves as worse than we are, and that bias can be more comfortable than accuracy. The overcast skies are familiar. Seeing yourself succeed on screen threatens the familiar weather. Bobby doesn't hate what he sees in the mirror. He hates that what he sees contradicts what he believes.
[30:46] KHALYLA Yeah, let's go with that.
[30:48] DR. K So like— like here— like this is a podcast that is extra loud. And then I'm thinking I'm— there's— there's just ordinary volume.
[30:56] BOBBY Yeah, yeah.
[30:57] DR. K And then there's— there's volume that is above the ordinary volume.
[31:00] Bobby and Gilbert laugh.
[31:04] BOBBY He's purposely been breaking his headphones not to listen.
[31:08] DR. K So— and so I— I think it's— you know, so I'm— I'm trying to think through something. My challenge is that I think if I explain it now it won't make sense yet. So I'm trying to think about—
[31:18] BOBBY I— I can understand things.
[31:20] DR. K No, no, I know you can understand things. It's— it's just— I feel like this is one of those things where it's like if we talk a little bit more, I think maybe it will become clear. Um, and then I think what Kat— Kat has the challenge of filling the space, right? So— so you're tuned in like we're quiet.
[31:36] BOBBY Yeah.
[31:37] DR. K But like if people are listening at home, so I think she's actually— she's serving a very important role, which oftentimes women do. She's— she's the—
[31:47] KHALYLA I love this guy!
[31:49] DR. K No, I'm serious, this is— this is what women get socialized to do. Right? So—
[31:53] BOBBY Oh, they're socialized to do it.
[31:55] DR. K Yeah. Soviet style. Do you feel the responsibility?
[31:58] KHALYLA Oh yeah. Right?
[32:00] DR. K Right? So it's like she has to step in and make sure that like things are okay for everybody. Whereas you and I—
[32:06] BOBBY Calling me gay.
[32:07] DR. K Yeah. Actually, yes. I mean, if you think about it— if you think about it, it's— it's such a low-effort joke, right? No offense.
[32:16] KHALYLA But anyway.
[32:17] BOBBY Let's— let's see this! Let's see this!
[32:19] DR. K When in doubt, lowest— lowest effort of a joke.
[32:22] BOBBY It's the bottom of the barrel! Let's say that!
[32:24] DR. K Yeah, it's— it's like— okay, good.
[32:25] BOBBY Okay, good.
[32:26] DR. K It's like in case— like break glass in case of emergency, call somebody gay.
[32:30] Bobby and Khalyla laugh.
[32:31] DR. K Right? Like that's— that's what happens.
[32:33] BOBBY Yeah, yeah. It's like a primal—
[32:35] DR. K So— so this actually— this actually signals to me that she's trying really hard.
[32:39] BOBBY That's not trying hard.
[32:40] DR. K No, I mean— no, 'cause dude, she's good, right? So if— if she's trying hard and she produces such a shitty joke—
[32:48] Bobby and Khalyla laugh hysterically.
[32:51] DR. K That— like you're at the bottom of the barrel. Like that's desperation. It's not— it's not—
[32:57] KHALYLA Okay, I think we're done.
[32:59] BOBBY Okay, we're done. Open mic, open mikey! You know what I mean? Yeah, I get it. I get it.
🏟️
The Standing Ovation Paradox
'They were chanting my name and they were just standing already. And it's a little bit of a shock — like, oh, they — people like me.' Bobby has been a professional comedian for 20+ years. He's been on Mad TV, dozens of films, runs two successful podcasts. And the genuine revelation at his own special is: people like me. This is not false modesty. This is a man who has spent his entire career succeeding while genuinely believing the success is happening to someone else.
The Mirror Problem
The mirror problem is not about vanity. It's about the impossibility of reconciling two versions of yourself. Internal Bobby is overcast, anxious, comparing himself to Ben Kingsley and losing. External Bobby is beloved, successful, funny enough to fill theaters. Both are true. The mirror forces you to see the external version, which contradicts the internal model, which triggers a threat response — literally fight or flight from your own premiere.
The Lexapro changes this by reducing the threat response to self-observation. Bobby can watch his special and think "I'm pretty good" for the first time in his life. Whether that's pharmaceutical or genuine growth is irrelevant — the result is that for the first time, the mirror doesn't trigger annihilation. He can look at himself and not reach for the shotgun.
IV. Ego Death and the Flow State 33:03–42:07
[33:03] DR. K Let's go back to his depression. Khalyla next, okay Kat?
[33:07] KHALYLA Yes, please. Oh, I have a lot of questions. I'm— I came prepared and loaded. No, but let's do Bobby.
[33:12] DR. K Yeah, so— so I guess this is just what I'm going to say at this point. So like— I know this is going to sound kind of weird, but this comes down to like who you are and like what— what people are, okay? So the first thing that I want to point out is you were so worried. So like anxiety and rumination and thoughts in your head of living up to a standard. So in our own head, we have an ego.
[33:36] BOBBY Oh yeah.
[33:37] DR. K An ego is like an identity of what we think we are. The crazy thing is what we are is not what we think we are. I know it sounds like really simple and duh, but like when the moment that you heard people— so high expectations makes you over-prepare. High expectations makes you paranoid, high expectations makes you anxious. When people are— are laughing and clapping and chanting your name or whatever, they're standing, right? You would expect in that moment that the expectations are actually at their highest. Because you're about to go on stage and everyone is already excited. So you would think that that would trigger a crisis in your ego, right? 'Cause this is like now the expectations are like here. It's not like expectations over six months of preparation, 18 months of preparation. It's like, "Oh fuck, these people are expecting me to show up and laugh," right? So then something really cool happens where if you step away from ego and into yourself. And that's what you did, right? You were like, "This is just a show," or some— something like that. You said something that was really simple that actually wasn't about you. It wasn't about whether you can do it or not do it, deliver or not deliver. It's like, "I come on stage—"
[34:49] BOBBY Okay.
[34:50] DR. K "I come on stage, period." I was trying to think about whether that would sound bad or I anyway. So— so when you come on stage, you show up on stage— dude, the way his face is like— sorry, I'm processing. Um, so when you come on stage—
[35:10] BOBBY Go up on stage.
[35:11] DR. K Go up on stage. Yeah, yeah, just go up.
[35:13] KHALYLA Get hard on stage.
[35:14] DR. K Yeah, when you go up on stage, right? So there is the actual performance of the comedy, there is actually I would say the embodiment of the comedy. Right? So if people are expecting you to embody the comedy and you embody the comedy, then it's fine.
[35:29] BOBBY Yeah. I think what you're— can I just say a couple of things? All right, number one, it's that as a comic, um, I know how to read a room.
[35:36] DR. K Mm-hmm.
[35:37] BOBBY Right? So it's like um— when they were cheering and they were like the energy, I just— I just know what that is, right? And I read the room. It had nothing to do with like, you know what I mean, rising to an occasion.
[35:50] DR. K Exactly.
[35:51] BOBBY Yeah, yeah, yeah. Right? So you were— and you want to say a couple things.
[35:54] DR. K I— I was— another thing I— god, you're so good. Um, the second thing is is that I don't know what it is, and I think that I always tell younger comics, I go, "It's not the funniest person that makes it in the business. It's not." It's— I know— I knew so many people at the open mic stage growing up where I was just like, "Oh, this person is a star." They're just the best jokes, they have the looks, they have everything. But you know, the difference between them and me is is that the guy that suc— that makes it is the person that can perform under immense amounts of pressure. There are just some people that are, you know, really good and then, you know, when the— the Tonight Show comes out to go see them, they just can't do it. They're not themselves, you know what I mean? They— they crumble under the— the weight of it, you know? And the one thing that I'm pretty 90% of the time I've always hit the ball in— in the right moments. I just— I rose to the occasion. Like I did the Tonight Show when I was a kid and I just— I knew that I had to do well and I just rose to the occasion and I did it, you know what I mean? So it's like, you know, I don't know if I'm not the most talented, I just can just do it, you know what I mean, in terrible situations, you know what I mean?
[37:09] DR. K Yeah, so I think that's— that's actually what's so scary, right? Because you can't control who shows up. So— so I would almost say like, you know, when you— the work of doing the comedy is— is like— so you kind of tap into that. And like you read the room, and then you're not thinking about living up to expectations. You're reading the room and you're with the room, you're in the present, and you are doing the work of comedy. That's what it means to show up. And when you actually show up, all of the thoughts and expectations that you have actually empty from your mind. You're not thinking about it. You're not thinking about doing a good job, you're just doing the work of the comedy. And I'm with you that when you say, you know, they crumble on stage, what is it that crumbles? What crumbles is the ego, the identity. They get too trapped in their head. Then they start to choke. Once they start to choke, the choking gets worse. Once you're like, "Oh my god, I'm choking."
[37:59] BOBBY Yeah.
[38:01] DR. K Right? And— and so I think there's a really important— like I work with a lot of people who are for lack of a better term high performers. And— and what we try to teach even on YouTube and on the internet is like how to tap into that best version of yourself and leave the ego behind.
[38:19] BOBBY Yeah.
[38:20] DR. K Right? So instead of living up to an expectation, do the action. Like become— I know this is going to sound cheesy but like— become one with the action. Become completely egoless, become a vessel. And— and when you do that, that's what— that's what really knocks it out of the park. And it doesn't matter. I mean, you can talk about, you know, Olympic athletes who will like enter the zone, you'll talk about the flow state, you can talk about people who are, you know, creative, comedians, performers, stuff like that. Um, and I'll even work with people who are like day traders and people in finance and it's the same. There are some times where like you're paranoid about whether a trade you're making like, "Should I buy crypto? Should I sell crypto?" But then there are times where like you almost become omniscient and you just like know. Like something in your subconscious, everything clicks.
[39:05] BOBBY Omniscient? I've never heard that word before.
[39:08] KHALYLA Means ever-present.
🧠
The Ego Is the Obstacle
Dr. K's thesis: high expectations inflate the ego, the inflated ego chokes performance, the choke confirms the fear. But when Bobby walked on stage to a standing ovation, something broke the cycle: 'It's just a show.' Three words of ego death. Not spiritual, not psychedelic. Just: the thing I was afraid of isn't the thing that's happening. He stopped trying to live up to the expectation and started doing the work of comedy. Embodiment replaced performance.
[39:09] DR. K That's omnipresent.
[39:11] Bobby and Gilbert laugh.
[39:15] BOBBY Not to mention—
[39:19] GILBERT Mansplaining! Kat, what are you doing today?
[39:22] KHALYLA Yeah, okay, anyway.
[39:23] DR. K I just realized I— I mansplained.
[39:27] BOBBY It's okay, no, you need to with her.
[39:29] KHALYLA No, no, no! Wait, wait, wait! Why are you directing it to me? You're— you're the one, you know what I mean?
[39:35] DR. K Yeah. Anyway, so— so I think that's— and I think the really scary thing about that is that you never know if you— you can't be sure that you're going to do that. Right? Like— like the 18 months when you're anxious, you can't predict that when you're about to go on stage and everyone is— is ready for you and you're going to— you just show up in the right way. Like at least what— what terrifies me. So— so I— I gave a probably the best talk I have ever given in my life and I'm afraid that that was the peak. So I went to a conference and I gave a talk that was just fucking spectacular. Like I have never done it that good.
[40:12] KHALYLA Crushed.
[40:13] DR. K Um, crushed. And then so the first thing that happened is people were like, "Can you come back next year?"
[40:18] BOBBY Oh, I see, I see.
[40:19] DR. K And and so, you know, I was talking to my wife and— so she's like, "Yeah, of course he can come back next year." And then I was— I was trying to convey to her that like I'm terrified because I think that like everything that— I showed up and no one expected anything.
[40:31] BOBBY Right.
[40:32] DR. K And I knocked it out of the park. And— and so now the problem is like people have expectations.
FACT Bobby performed on The Tonight Show 'as a kid' — his first major TV appearance. His observation that 'the guy that makes it is the person that can perform under immense amounts of pressure' is supported by performance psychology research. Anders Ericsson's work on deliberate practice found that elite performers don't just practice more — they practice performing under pressure. Bobby's pre-special strategy of doing intentionally tough rooms mirrors this exactly.
[40:37] BOBBY Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[40:38] DR. K And people sometimes don't realize like how terrifying expectations are.
[40:43] BOBBY Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[40:44] DR. K Right? 'Cause everyone around you is looking at you and they're like, "I've seen you do this a thousand times. Like it's totally fine. Like you're going to do fine. Like it'll be fine."
[40:49] BOBBY Yeah.
[40:50] DR. K But to be the one who has to produce that, right? Like that's— it's fine for other people to recognize the pattern of your success and say you've done this 999 times, of course you can do it the thousandth time. But when you're the one who has to show up the thousandth time and you know how close disaster was each one of those 999 times, which no one sees, right? They just see the finished product. They don't see the blood, sweat, and tears that went into it. Um, and that's scary.
[41:21] BOBBY Yeah. Wow, wow, wow, wow, wow. Um, but you'll be fine. You're going to kill it.
[41:28] DR. K So I think actually the— the solution that I've been— that I advocate— what? What's up?
[41:33] BOBBY No, no, no. Why'd you laugh so much?
[41:36] KHALYLA Because you just can't give him advice! He's giving you advice!
[41:39] DR. K Of course he can.
[41:40] KHALYLA Oh, he can give you—
[41:41] Bobby laughs.
[41:45] BOBBY What is going on with you, dude? Yeah, yeah, I'm wise as well.
[41:49] DR. K Okay. No, I mean— I— I didn't see it as advice, but I mean I think everyone— but I mean I think he was trying to be reassuring. I would call that reassurance. Like, "You're going to kill it." Like I don't— it's kind of like my gay comment, right?
CLINICAL Dr. K confessing his own performance anxiety — giving the best talk of his life and being terrified it was his peak — is a deliberate therapeutic move. He's modeling vulnerability. But Bobby's response is more revealing: he immediately tries to reassure Dr. K ('You'll be fine, you're going to kill it'). Dr. K catches it: 'He's taking care of me now.' Bobby's caretaking instinct is so powerful it overrides his own therapy session. This is the same pattern that kept him in a relationship for 10 years while neglecting his partner — he CAN care deeply, but only in quick bursts of reassurance, not in sustained attention.
The 999 Near-Misses
"They just see the finished product. They don't see how close disaster was each one of those 999 times, which no one sees." This is the sharpest observation in the episode. Every high performer knows this feeling — the audience sees a pattern of success, the performer sees 999 near-misses and wonders which one will be the actual miss.
The flow state Dr. K describes — "become one with the action, become completely egoless, become a vessel" — maps across every domain: comedy, athletics, trading, meditation. The state where you stop thinking about doing the thing and just do the thing. Bobby knows this state intimately from comedy. He just can't access it in the rest of his life.
Bobby reassuring Dr. K is structurally identical to Khalyla calling someone gay — low-effort comfort to fill uncomfortable space. Dr. K names both in real time without making either person feel stupid. This is the craft of clinical work disguised as podcast conversation.
V. The Outside Smoker 42:07–46:22
[42:07] KHALYLA Yeah, yeah.
[42:08] DR. K Right? So he's— so Bobby's taking care of me now.
[42:11] KHALYLA Yeah, he's taking care of you.
[04:12] DR. K Right? There's this term when I was a competitive swimmer, I swam most of my life and I swam for the Philippine national team and up to a D1 in college. And my favorite term we used to use was "outside smoker." And when I was a favorite to win the race, I— if I was in lane four, which is where they put the fastest seeded swimmer, um, I never swam my best race. But if for some reason I was in lane one or lane eight and not expected to win, I always, always swam my best times. Like unanimously throughout like my 15 years as a swimmer. If you put me on the outside lanes with zero expectation—
[42:51] BOBBY Oh, so the people on the outside lanes? I didn't know that.
[42:53] KHALYLA That's what they call the outside smokers.
[42:55] BOBBY Oh.
[42:56] KHALYLA So— and because again it was like when the— 'cause you know like I had a lot of trauma around like my parents like pushing me to be like the best. But if you put me on those outside lanes, you knew I just knew I would— I was free. I was free to just execute and swim.
[43:09] DR. K Just— just swim, right?
[43:10] KHALYLA Yeah. And it felt so good. Those are my favorite like— I don't have a lot of positive memories as an athlete, but being on the outside lanes was like my favorite memory.
[43:20] DR. K Yeah, and that's when you do the best.
[43:21] KHALYLA Yeah.
[43:22] DR. K Yeah.
[43:23] BOBBY When there was lower expectations.
[43:24] KHALYLA Yeah.
FACT Khalyla Kuhn swam for the Philippine national team and was recruited to Division One college swimming. The 'outside smoker' is swimming terminology for a swimmer in an outside lane (1 or 8) who posts a faster time than the favored swimmers in center lanes (3, 4, 5). It's the equivalent of a dark horse winning from the cheap seats.
[43:25] BOBBY Yeah, yeah. Wow. But how— so you never hit the ball when it was high expectations?
[43:29] KHALYLA I mean I did, right? I would win, but in terms of posting my personal best or hitting like— I remember like um— one of the last meets I did right before I got recruited to swim for Division One, um, I was just coming off just a really tough year of not training, my dad was dying, a lot of things were happening in my life. So there was just a lot of pressure to be like, "I need this scholarship. I need this—" we didn't have any money, this was the only way to get to college was if I swam fast enough. And I remember that race, it was an international meet, it was a Q-meet in Long Beach, and it just so happened that because it was an international meet, you had a lot of Olympians there. And I just wasn't the fastest seeded swimmer. So I swam in lane one and I shaved four seconds off my personal best, got my senior cut, and got recruited like literally the next week to Division One.
[44:20] BOBBY That must have been the happiest—
[44:21] KHALYLA It was so freeing to be so like— from the beginning to the end I was like, "All I have to do is swim. I am literally nobody in this lineup. There's so much better than me that there's no expectation." And it was like so— yeah, it was amazing.
[44:38] DR. K What were you saying, Kat?
[44:40] Bobby laughs.
[44:43] KHALYLA Um, well I was just saying 'cause I'm a like— low in comedy, so it's like when you have big names like Bobby and Santino and all these guys and you have to be on those lineups, you do feel like there's like not that much expectation, but then you also feel like, "Oh, I gotta— I really gotta prove myself," but not in the way that you might feel 'cause you have people in the audience that are there to see you.
[45:05] DR. K I think but— when you as— it's weird, you know, I don't really care as much too, which is I think I don't know what that is. As you get older, you're just like, "I don't really care what they think really," you know? I cared so much in the first 20 years of me doing it. But now it's just like I don't— if I have a really bad set, it's not as devastating to me. You know? So it's like it just— it's time. And I think once you get to like a certain level and you're just kind of like, "Okay, I'm not going to fucking beat myself up over something that's— you're going to be doing for the rest of your life." Think of that. And also the things that like I don't remember. I've done thousands and thousands— I don't remember any of them, I don't remember any of the reactions of— people will come up to me like, "Hey, you know, I was there, Boca Raton, 92— I mean, 2002, second show." I'm like, "I don't remember that. I was in Boca Raton?"
[46:05] Bobby and Khalyla laugh.
[46:06] KHALYLA Is that the first time you've said that?
[46:07] BOBBY It was the first time I ever said it. Boca Raton!
[46:11] KHALYLA Is that how you pronounce it?
[46:12] BOBBY I never heard it, but yeah. What do you mean? Boca Raton! Florida! Hey! I did it the Italian way, you know? But anyway, sorry.
🏊
Lane One
'All I have to do is swim. I am literally nobody in this lineup.' Khalyla shaved four seconds off her personal best — a massive margin in competitive swimming — at an international meet filled with Olympians. Her father was dying. Her family had no money. Swimming was the only path to college. And she produced her best performance from lane one, the outsider's lane, because the expectations were so far above her that they stopped applying to her. She wasn't competing. She was just swimming.
The Freedom of Low Expectations
Three people, three domains, one pattern:
| Person | Domain | Low Expectation Moment | Result |
| Bobby | Comedy | Crowd already standing — exceeded worst-case prep | Best special of career |
| Khalyla | Swimming | Lane 1, international meet, "literally nobody" | 4 seconds off PB, D1 scholarship |
| Dr. K | Public speaking | No one expected anything at the conference | Best talk he's ever given |
The pattern: Low expectations → ego dissolves → authentic self emerges → peak performance.
The inverse: High expectations → ego inflates → authentic self retreats → mediocrity or paralysis.
This is why Bobby can perform under pressure but can't watch himself perform. The performance IS ego dissolution. The replay IS ego confrontation.
PATTERN: CONFIRMED ACROSS 3 DOMAINS
VI. The Sixteen-Hour Day 46:22–50:55
[46:22] BOBBY You had notes?
[46:23] KHALYLA Oh, I have so many questions. I haven't even like— but I feel as though it would— it would make us hard pivot in a— a different direction.
[46:31] BOBBY Why? There's other things. But go ahead.
[46:33] KHALYLA Okay, so we're going to hard pivot from your special 'cause I have so many questions that might be rooted in um...
[46:40] DR. K Resentment from ten years of a relationship?
[46:42] KHALYLA Yeah.
[46:43] BOBBY Whoa, dude!
[46:44] KHALYLA But— my first question is since you have a lot of background with gamers in general, um, how do you approach someone who doesn't see their gaming as a problem?
[47:45] DR. K Um, so can I ask you a question?
[47:48] KHALYLA Yeah.
[47:49] DR. K Did you think— so when y'all were together, Bobby was gaming a lot?
[47:54] KHALYLA I would say 16 hours a day.
🎮
Sixteen Hours Is Not a Number
When Khalyla says '16 hours a day,' the room laughs. Bobby deflects: 'Skyrim came out! What am I going to do?' But 16 hours is not an amount of gaming. 16 hours is the amount of waking life that needs to be filled with something other than being yourself. If you sleep 8 hours and game 16, you have zero hours left for anything that isn't unconscious or simulated. Khalyla's emotional, social, and sexual needs existed in a gap that had shrunk to zero.
[47:57] DR. K And you thought it was a problem?
[48:00] KHALYLA I'm codependent, let's— I want to be very clear on this. Um, because I tried to be the cool girl and pretend that it wasn't a problem for so long because I was convinced that my assessment of him was he needed this to either stem or escape or soothe himself, so I convinced myself for the first couple years that this is just what this man needs to get by. And— but after that there was an awakening of, "Oh, I've completely abandoned my own needs because I've just let him roam free with this thing that he does for so much of our life together." And so yeah.
[48:42] DR. K And then what did you do?
[48:44] KHALYLA I— I tried to address it, but I feel like I addressed it a little bit too late and in a way that wasn't effective because I— I sounded like a nag.
[48:53] DR. K Okay, so how did you address it?
[48:55] KHALYLA Nag. Nag means what though? It was like, "I need— we need to be doing things outside of this, can we go do this, can we," you know, "can you stop, can you put that down?" And it was just like constant.
[49:07] DR. K And how many times a— like a day? Every day?
[49:10] KHALYLA No, or that or I would just shut down. And then— and wait for him to notice that I was— it's been six days since he's— yeah.
[49:17] DR. K Okay, so you were encouraging him to change his behavior.
[49:20] BOBBY I mean Skyrim came out! What am I going to do? So immersive! Skyrim came out!
FACT Skyrim (The Elder Scrolls V) was released November 11, 2011, and has been re-released on virtually every platform since. Dr. K's gaming credentials are real — he played Arena (1994), Daggerfall (1996), Morrowind (2002), Oblivion (2006), and Skyrim. He hasn't played Starfield. His admission 'I had a problem with gaming addiction too' is not performative — he nearly failed out of college due to World of Warcraft before finding meditation.
[49:27] DR. K Which— which time? 'Cause Skyrim keeps coming out.
[49:31] BOBBY I mean the original, the first time it came out, it was like— I'm a Bethesda fan, I was like, "It's coming out! What am I going to do? You want to cuddle? No, I'm playing!"
[49:41] BOBBY Come on guys, whoo! Whoo! Whoo!
[49:44] KHALYLA I'm kind of— I'm an over-understander and I understand like what he went through as a kid, so in my head when he would talk about Red Dead Redemption was coming out in X amount of days, I was like, "Oh, he needs this," right? So then I felt guilt for even trying to like pry him away from this thing he was so excited about. And then so I would go back and forth between being really angry and being like, "You can— can you just shut it down?" to being like, "Oh fuck, I'm just going to pretend that, you know, this doesn't exist."
[50:11] DR. K Okay, but "Can you shut it down?" would not work.
[50:14] KHALYLA It would not work, no.
[50:15] DR. K Right? So then— so then when that wouldn't work, and then— and then you're just like, "Well, this is not working. I guess I just have to take care of my own needs, handle it myself, he's going to do whatever the fuck he's going to do." And then the— the volcano of getting frustrated with him because you're in a relationship with a man who's playing Skyrim for 16 hours a day and you have social needs, sexual needs, whatever, right? Emotional needs. And then you're like, "Hey, can we hang out sometime?" And then he's like—
[50:45] KHALYLA Yeah, and it was also layered by the fact that once the video game was shut off, it was instead of connecting with me, then he would go straight to porn and jerk off and then go to bed.
CLINICAL The codependency confession is where Khalyla earns the entire conversation: 'I tried to be the cool girl and pretend it wasn't a problem because I was convinced he needed this to escape.' She diagnosed Bobby's addiction correctly — it WAS an escape mechanism — and then used that correct diagnosis to justify not addressing it. This is the codependency trap: understanding why someone does something harmful feels like helping, but understanding without confrontation is just surveillance.
The Nagging Cycle
Dr. K maps the cycle precisely: nag → temporary compliance → relapse → nag harder → become someone you hate → give up → resentment → explosive confrontation → temporary compliance → relapse.
Khalyla: "I hated the person I became. Like I felt like very much like a brute overlord." The nagging doesn't fail because it's the wrong approach. It fails because you can't be sober for someone else. As long as the motivation to change is external, the change lasts exactly as long as the external pressure. Remove the pressure — even for a day — and the behavior returns.
Dr. K's solution from his book: stop trying to change the behavior. Ask open-ended questions. "How do you feel about your gaming?" Not "can you stop?" The first question opens a conversation. The second one starts a war.
VII. The Doom Cycle 50:55–60:00
[50:55] BOBBY Oh, here we go.
[50:57] DR. K Okay, here we go.
[50:58] BOBBY So here we go. The train of doom.
[51:00] DR. K Okay, this is great.
[51:01] BOBBY No, no, no, this is— it's a circle, circle, circle of doom. It goes nowhere.
[51:07] KHALYLA Bobby, by the way, I've— like we've reconciled, I've forgiven, it's—
[51:11] BOBBY Yeah, you like to bring up old stuff, huh? Listen, we're not together anymore. It didn't work. You're no longer the co-host, by the way.
[51:16] Bobby and Gilbert laugh.
[05:19] BOBBY Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm the villain? I'm the villain now?
[51:21] DR. K Yeah, you're so defensive.
[51:23] Bobby laughs.
[51:24] DR. K Right? Like bro— bro— bro. So let's just— let's— I'm with you. No, no, no, I— I got—
[51:33] BOBBY You've been together with the Kat stuff.
[51:35] DR. K I still— I'm still— so listen, listen Bobby. No, no, no, but you— she villainized you.
[51:41] BOBBY She villainized me!
[51:42] DR. K I know, but that makes you the villain.
[51:44] BOBBY Wait, villainized—
[51:45] DR. K Yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay, let's— let's— okay, dude.
[51:51] KHALYLA Wait, by the way, you're free to villainize me back. I'm— it's fair game.
[51:54] BOBBY You shouldn't bring up old shit, guy!
[51:55] DR. K No, no, no, I know, I know, I know. Yeah, yeah. So— so step number one—
[51:59] BOBBY No, step number one is she's still the villain.
💀
The Circle of Doom
'Once the video game was shut off, instead of connecting with me, he would go straight to porn and jerk off and then go to bed.' Bobby calls it 'the circle of doom.' It is not a circle. It is a stack — each layer a more concentrated form of neurochemical escape.
[52:01] Bobby and Gilbert laugh.
[52:03] DR. K Well, wait, just as soon as— so she'll— she'll become the villain soon enough on her own. When— 'cause now what's happening is y'all two are fighting, I'm in the middle right now. And then if I ever take a step back, she's going to feel so fucking uncomfortable that she's going to have to step in and call someone gay, right? You see what I mean?
[52:22] BOBBY You come closer, guy! I got your back.
[52:25] DR. K I also have your back. So just because we're— so she— so you were fine with being a degenerate 16-hour gamer, but when your athlete swimming girlfriend complains because you're jerking off instead of having sex with her, that is like when you're like, "No!" Right? Like you see what I mean? Okay, so— but I still have your back. He's got your back. But calling you out and having your back are not mutually exclusive.
[52:50] BOBBY Oh. I like that.
[52:51] KHALYLA Oh, yeah, you like that!
[52:53] DR. K Right? So what we're going to do is we're going to— we're going to— we're going to help you out.
[52:56] BOBBY I don't need help, I already addressed it.
[52:58] DR. K Okay, fair enough.
[52:59] BOBBY Yeah, I don't do that anymore.
[53:01] DR. K Okay.
[53:02] BOBBY Yeah, I— the— it was one of those things where it's like I— it ruined my relationship with Khalyla, and in this new relationship, that I don't do it anymore.
[53:13] DR. K There's so much there, man. So— so it's growth for you.
[53:15] BOBBY Oh yeah.
[53:16] DR. K Right? But like here's what's annoying for Khalyla.
[53:19] BOBBY She's got a man, she's got a baby now. Great. She moved on. Great. Better horizons. Great. If only that were—
[53:26] KHALYLA Better horizons!
[53:27] Bobby and Khalyla laugh.
[53:28] DR. K I think the real tragedy here is that— that you— both y'all have moved on and that's like healthy and great and good for you. And also for ten years, I don't know if it was ten years, right, she was living with this. So that's a lot of emotional energy, it's a lot of like rejection that builds up.
[53:43] BOBBY It wasn't the full ten years that that happened.
[53:45] KHALYLA Okay, whatever. The last five.
[53:47] DR. K Okay, good. Right? So do you feel— you feel it, right? So— so like when I make a mistake, like it needs to be corrected, which is good. But you feel— like you're signaling to us really hard, "I'm not that guy anymore." And I put in the work.
[54:01] BOBBY Sometimes I slip.
[54:02] DR. K Okay.
[54:03] BOBBY Like a week and a half will go by, it's like, "I'll just jerk off tonight," or whatever, but I don't do it every night.
[54:08] DR. K Okay. So now I'm going to pivot earlier we were like, "Okay, we're going to talk about the book," and I was like, "Why?" Now is the time to talk about the book.
[54:14] BOBBY Let's talk about— yeah, yeah, we're a good segue.
[54:16] DR. K Okay. So— so this is actually why I wrote a book. So— so I think that— so the book, "How to Raise a Healthy Gamer," this is why I wrote it. Because people are having this problem and they literally do not know what to do. Right? So what people try to do is they try to change the behavior, like so you start to nag, and then you get exactly into the position, Khalyla, I have heard your story a thousand times. Of like you're trying to get him to change and you're like you nag, but that doesn't work, and then you kind of like ease off, and that doesn't work. And then the other thing with which we didn't talk about is sometimes the nagging works, right? Like sometimes with a lot of effort, you can get him to stop for like a day or two. But then the problem is like on a Saturday night he's fine, and then on Sunday maybe he's on his best behavior because you're threatening to break up with him or whatever, and then like Monday— like the moment that you stop nagging him, then it comes back. And then the really bad thing is like you can get kind of get him to stop, but then you don't like the person you become.
[55:22] KHALYLA I hated the person I became. Like I felt like very much like a brute overlord.
[55:29] DR. K Right. So this is where— you know, this is— this is what the book is good at. So the book is there to teach communication skills that I think absolutely— I mean, it's designed to help you have your kids develop a healthy relationship with technology, so you can set good technology habits and things like that. But I think this is where it teaches some of the most fundamental communication skills. So I think the— the way that you want to start is by asking Bobby. Right? So— here's a lesson I've learned doing addiction psychiatry for a while. Um, you can't be sober for someone else. Like you can try. You know, you just can't do it.
CLINICAL 'I ruined our relationship. I accept that. I changed my behavior too late.' This sentence — spoken on a comedy podcast in front of millions — is not a defense mechanism. It is the most vulnerable moment in the entire episode. Immediately followed by: 'Sometimes I slip. Like a week and a half will go by.' The slip is not failure. The admission of the slip is growth. Bobby four years ago could not have said this sentence.
[56:03] BOBBY I know.
[56:04] DR. K I know.
[56:05] BOBBY Yeah.
[56:06] DR. K So the biggest problem here is as long as you are trying to get him to stop and he is not interested in stopping, there's no way to win. Right. So I think the first question is like, "Bobby, how do you feel about your gaming? What's it like to play Skyrim for 16 hours a day?" You know, like I know Skyrim is a great game, like I played Skyrim. I think it's awesome. What's up? You know, like Skyrim is great, I played Morrowind, I played Oblivion.
[6:29] BOBBY Oh! Deep cut, deep cut.
[6:30] DR. K I played Arena, I played Daggerfall.
[6:33] BOBBY What the fuck I do? What's up dude? Bethesda all day every day, huh?
[6:36] DR. K Yep. Well, used to— used to be Bethesda all day every day. Nowadays— he doesn't play Fallout. So you didn't play Starfield.
[6:43] DR. K Did not touch Starfield. Played New Vegas, played Fallout 3, haven't tried Fallout 4. I'm circling around though, maybe. Fallout 4 is great. Um, we'll see. Speaking of— speaking of expectations to live up to, I think this is the problem with Elder Scrolls 6 is like they just have such huge expectations.
[6:58] BOBBY Oh, right, right. That's why they haven't come out yet.
[7:00] DR. K I know. That's why they just— anyway, but getting back to— I had a problem with gaming addiction too, that's the joke. But— so I think just asking him, you know, what's going on? Like what's going on with this? Like how do you feel about this? So you want to start with like open-ended questions, and as long as he views you as the enemy, he's going to get defensive. And we're even seeing like an echo of that come out in this conversation, even though y'all have moved on, right? But you see like the little bit of the resentment comes out, a little bit of the defensiveness comes out. And y'all have absolutely moved on, I'm not trying to demonize—
[57:34] KHALYLA No, you're right, I'm sweating. Like even just asking that question—
[57:37] DR. K Right, so exactly. It throws me back into this scenario of like— exactly. So that's what happens. We get thrown back. We get thrown back. Right? And Bobby is signaling to us and it's important to acknowledge that, right? He's not the person he used to be. And you guys have— he has grown, y'all have moved on, he's in a new relationship now, he's been sober for four years?
[57:57] BOBBY Four years.
[57:58] KHALYLA Four years.
[57:59] BOBBY Sure have.
[58:00] DR. K And so there's a lot there to be proud of and we'll get to that later. There's a lot, really a lot. A lot, a lot to be proud of, you know?
[58:08] BOBBY Yeah.
[58:09] DR. K Are you— you're on the verge of tears?
[58:11] BOBBY No.
[58:12] DR. K Okay.
[58:13] BOBBY I'm just like going through something right now, man.
[58:15] DR. K Yeah, what are you— what are you going through?
[58:17] BOBBY Um, rage.
[58:18] Bobby and Khalyla laugh.
[58:21] DR. K Okay. What are you angry about?
[58:23] BOBBY Just this whole situation. What? It's like, you know, she brought up old stuff, man, you know? And it's over— I ruined our relationship. I accept that. You know, I changed my behavior too late after, okay? And now we're friends and I love her, right? But it's like, you know, I um— now the video game thing, I've addressed the porn, the video game thing is um— it's a problem. Still a problem. But um— yeah, anyway.
[58:59] DR. K Well, we will get back to the rage in a second. But let's— I'm serious. Shelf the rage. Shelf the rage. Yeah. Right? So— so I think— I also am curious about what you feel that makes you— that what you're trying to run away from on the inside.
[59:06] BOBBY Hmm. What do you mean?
[59:08] DR. K Right? So you've mentioned a couple of times that like when we play video games or use substances, like you're just trying to get away from like something on the inside.
[59:16] BOBBY I just don't feel— you know, I feel— I think um— I think I've— I have the right kind of concoction of things now. I um— I'm going to more AA meetings and you know I went to my sponsor's house a couple weeks ago and we started working the steps again. And then along with this— these new medications and stuff, I think that I'm um—
[59:58] DR. K You're in a good— good place.

The Clinical Pause
Dr. K stops being a podcast guest and becomes a doctor: 'Make sure that if there's a chance that we're waking something — these conversations will increase your risk of relapse.' He pauses the entertainment to do actual medicine. Bobby deflects: 'I'm fine, 100% fine, I don't give a fuck.' Which is exactly what someone at elevated relapse risk sounds like. Dr. K accepts it and moves on — he planted the seed, forcing the issue would trigger the exact defensiveness he's trying to avoid.
Addiction as Architecture
GAMING: STILL ACTIVE PORN: REDUCED SOBRIETY: 4 YEARS SELF-AWARENESS: HIGH
Bobby's growth is real and measurable. Four years sober from substances. Porn reduced but not eliminated. Gaming still active but no longer 16 hours. In a new relationship where he's not repeating the pattern. And most importantly: he can name what he did wrong without deflecting into a bit.
The tragedy Khalyla carries: she lived in the negative space of the doom stack for five years. Her emotional, social, and sexual needs existed in the gaps between Bobby's escape mechanisms, and those gaps were shrinking to zero. She became a "brute overlord" trying to pull him out, then hated herself for it, then gave up, then the resentment built until the relationship ended. And Bobby changed after she left. The growth that could have saved the relationship only happened because the relationship ended.
VIII. The Rise 60:00–end
[60:00] BOBBY Good balance, you know? You know, I wish that I addressed some of this stuff when we were together, you know? Um, it would have helped I think a lot, you know? But um— let's get to question two, but Bobby you should be careful after this podcast.
[60:15] BOBBY What do you mean?
[60:16] DR. K So like make sure that, you know, if there's a chance that we're waking something for— for real, like this is like clinical for a second. Just you know if you start to feel like you— there's a— there's a non-zero chance that these conversations will increase your risk of relapse.
[60:32] BOBBY Oh no, I'm fine.
[60:33] DR. K Okay.
[60:34] BOBBY 100% fine. Oh yeah, yeah, I don't give a fuck.
[60:37] DR. K But— okay. Right? We— I mean, like I know we're talking about stuff but we want everyone to be safe.
[60:43] BOBBY I'm fine, totally fine. It's entertainment.
[60:45] DR. K Okay, good. Yeah, yeah. Um, what's the second question?
[60:47] KHALYLA Oh, god. Yeah.
[60:49] BOBBY You doing okay?
[60:50] KHALYLA Oh yeah, good, good things.
[60:51] DR. K Have you been muzzled?
[60:53] KHALYLA Huh?
[60:54] DR. K Do you feel muzzled?
[60:55] KHALYLA No, no, no. Just observing.
[60:57] DR. K Okay. Yeah. I mean, what's going on with you right now? How are you feeling?
[61:00] KHALYLA Oh, I feel pretty good. Um, yeah, it's interesting, I've been thinking a lot about the ego a lot. And 'cause in this profession you can compare yourself and sometimes that can be debilitating um, towards creativity. So I was just trying to be more present and more just like embracing who you are, right? 'Cause there's not another person like you.
[61:26] DR. K Absolutely.
[61:27] KHALYLA So.
[61:28] BOBBY I want to say something that I observed the other night.
[61:30] KHALYLA Okay.
[61:31] BOBBY Okay? This is a good thing. I'm not saying anything negative, okay?
[61:34] KHALYLA I get scared.
[61:35] Bobby and Khalyla laugh.
[61:36] BOBBY Yeah, yeah. I mean you had your notebook or whatever, you're running around, right? And you're like hosting huge shows. Like she is now hosting like, you know, Jay Leno's on— I mean all these big names and she's, right? I mean these huge shows and she's— she's very beloved at the Comedy Store and she um— and you I can see you running around in your excitement and you're in this big dream state and I— I envy it. I wish I remember that. I remember like in that period where it, you know, anything can happen, right? You don't know, you have— but you can see yourself rise, you feel the rise, right?
[62:23] KHALYLA Yeah, I—
[62:24] BOBBY And you see— you feel the other people around you resent you.
🌅
Bobby's Gift
'This feeling you have is everything. This is as good as it's going to get.' A man who achieved his 20-year dream and woke up the next morning under the same overcast skies, telling the woman he loved for a decade — the woman whose needs he neglected for years — that the climb is the peak, not the summit. He knows because he lived the other side. The special was the destination. It was magical. And then it was over and nothing had changed inside.
[62:28] KHALYLA Yes.
[62:29] BOBBY Yeah, but it's still— no, I can feel it, I can sense it on your behalf. You know what I mean? Like the— the eyes. You know what I mean? Especially from the ladies. But the excitement, you're in a really exciting space.
[62:42] KHALYLA But it's scary.
[62:43] BOBBY But it's— I'm telling you right now, it— you'll never get that again. Really feel this. It's so fun. That anything can happen, 'cause when it does happen, it's a letdown, baby. My special.
[62:55] Bobby and Khalyla laugh.
[62:56] BOBBY Yeah, yeah. So what I'm saying is is that this feeling that you have is everything. This is as good as it's going to— as it's going to get.
[63:05] DR. K Bobby, can I do something real quick? Can I— can I whisper a question in your ear?
[63:08] BOBBY You can do whatever you want, guy!
[63:09] DR. K I'm going to whisper a question in your ear and I want you to ask her.
[63:12] BOBBY Why can't you ask her?
[63:13] DR. K I want you to ask it.
[63:15] Dr. K leans over and whispers into Bobby's ear while Gilbert makes humming noises.
[63:22] DR. K Ask that question.
[63:23] BOBBY I— I know what. Can I do it on my own time, guy?
[63:26] Bobby and Gilbert laugh.
[63:27] DR. K On my own time, guy! Sorry, I love you.
[63:31] BOBBY Um, what's scary about it?
[63:34] KHALYLA Um... you don't um— there's just more pressure, more eyes on you, and I don't want to fail. I feel tired from like just feeling like— yeah, you're just— I— I know you have like an insane amount of pressure on you constantly. But I feel like there's like the first time there's like a few eyes on me and I feel just scared to mess it up or you know, being compared to or— it's— I know we have to be strong and be like, "Oh yeah, I don't care what people are saying about you," but it just like it does when you hear people talking about you or this and that. That can be scary.
[64:18] BOBBY Mm. I see.
[64:20] Bobby and Khalyla laugh.
[64:22] DR. K No, that was good, right? So— so I think— what's you— you didn't—
[64:25] BOBBY You didn't what?
[64:26] DR. K I'll tell you why I did that. Okay, is because I can go on and on about it. I had so many other things I wanted to say, you know, about it, but I didn't want to. So instead, you know, um— let's move on— not move on, but um, I don't know.
[64:43] DR. K Okay, okay, this is huge. Okay, so first of all— how the fuck? It's huge, dude. Okay, do you guys— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— so— CLINICAL Dr. K's whispered question — the one he makes Bobby ask instead of asking himself — is the final therapeutic move of the episode. He forces Bobby to care for Khalyla in the exact way Bobby failed to during their relationship. 'What's scary about it?' asked through Bobby's mouth, about Khalyla's feelings, with genuine attention. The question is not therapy. The question IS the repair. Bobby asking it is Bobby practicing the thing he couldn't do for ten years.
The Repair
The episode ends with Khalyla admitting she's scared of her own rise, and Bobby listening — really listening, not deflecting, not making a bit. Dr. K engineered this moment across 64 minutes of conversation. Every intervention, every named defense mechanism, every clinical aside was building toward this: Bobby caring for Khalyla in real time, on mic, without the protective layer of comedy.
Four years sober. New relationship. Can watch his own special. Can name what he did wrong. Can listen to his ex-girlfriend's fear and respond with wisdom instead of a joke. The overcast skies are still there — they'll always be there. But the man standing under them is different.
